How to go about changing the exhaust?

Post by grittle » Tue May 20, 2008 7:10 pm

Planning on changing the exhaust on my 111R at the weekend. No idea about how to go about it at the moment, even how to get the tray off.

Anything to look out for? Good tips? Will I need anything other than tools?

Advice appreciated

Its not too tricky - I had to do mine a few times on the Exige and have helped others.

8mm socket set to undo all the bolts and I think they have two allen key bigger bolts that are made of cheese to undo then undertray off.

Once you get it off, it will be fairly obvious - there are two hangers, one each side. These are also 8mm bolts. There is also a section of the heat shielding that whoever fitted the 2bular may or may not have replaced, which is tricky to remove without slicing your hands up as its razor sharp. Then its more 8mm bolts to remove the exhaust hangers.

The wiggling on and off can be tricky where the exhaust fits over the cat pipe, especially if you are re-fitting a standard guy as they weigh a ton....

Where are you, as you may find someone with an hour to kill that can lend a hand.

What he said.

Easy enough if its been off before. Use copious amount of copper slip when you put it back and it will be easier next time too!!

Thanks JJ, Rich.

I've been helping a pal sort out his garage (where we built the Cat) so a) he is due me and b) I can use his pit on Saturday.

Copper slip - I take it that means copper based grease (ie with a high melting point). Do I need anything else to seal the exhaust? Looks like the exhaust slips over a pipe and is clamped

Complete guide with pictures here :thumbsup http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=292445

Took me about 2 hours with lots of skinned knuckles and swearing the first time, can now do it in about an hour with only a few expletives along the way :D

Err, you really shouldn't put copperslip upstream of the O2 sensors (the 111R has a post-cat O2 sensor). They don't like it. You're probably OK using it on the flange bolts, but you should never use it on the threads of the O2 sensor itself. Obviously downstream of the O2 sensor it doesn't matter, so assuming you've just swapped the back box, no harm done, but watch it elsewhere in the exhaust system.

Cheers,
Robin

Edited to correct "downstream" to "upstream" in the first sentence - bottom line, you don't want copperslip to touch the O2 sensor ...
