Aircon Rechrage

Post by JMB29 » Thu May 29, 2008 5:08 pm

Took my car to quick fit other day (only garage open in the area at the time) to get my aircon recharged as it had been drained to fix my heater a couple of months ago. Anyway, came back after an hour and was told that they could not do it because the pipes are at an awkward angle and their universal connectors wont fit on because of the pipe angle. Does anyone know if Lotus use special connectors ?

Cheers,

Jamie

Not that I know of - I do know that QF are muppets and wouldn't trust them to lick a stamp, let alone work on an Elise... Probably couldn't find the system...

Royal Mail are aware of this and as such most stamps are now sold in sticky format where you peel them out of a book and stick them on you letter pre-stickied :D

Halfrauds sell kits of various types of refrigerant, they're in big aerosol tins with the Schreader type valve on the end (i think there are others too) i got one for the 300ZX after i did the engine change worked fine, but i dont know if it would have been better if i had the system vacuum dried and purged before the re-fill, but th AC works anyway.

Was the gas that was recovered by the garage that did the heater work not put back in?

I'm needing to re-charge the system in Mandy's mondeo - was thinking about these kits but wasn't sure if they worked

Why is it needing re-charged? Is there a leak, then the Halfords kit won't fix the leak.

They system should also be evacuated to remove any air and moisture before adding the gas.

How much gas does the system take (weight in grams) how much gas is in the Halfords kit?

I know someone who could look at a Mondeo for you (but wouldn't recommend him for an Elise)

Hi John,

It's not worked since we picked the car up in January - gets colder but not cold (IYSWIM)

I've heard that it escapes if you don't use???

Going to be using it on holiday in a month or two so that would be great if you can PM me details :thumbsup

Hi Colin,

If it is getting cold (IKWYM :D ) then it will probably still have some gas in it. Do you hear the compressor kicking in when turning it on? If so a top-up kit may be good enough, as there should be no air in the system, just not enough gas.....

If getting a kit from Halfords try and get it with the dye in it, it will make finding future leaks easier.

Yes if the air con is not used frequently (even in winter, its great to help with de-misting) the seals can dry out and the gas can leak away. Most manufacturers would recommend weekly use of 10+ mins (ish) to keep it okay.

Cheers

MacK

p.s. PM sent

Ta - I can't here a compressor kick in but it does drop the temp by a few degrees (based on feel rather than fact)

I'll have a bash with the halford stuff and report back :D

If that fails I've got your pm :thumbsup
