Cooling system mods
Cooling system mods
I had a search about for the info I was looking for but I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for. Bassically there is nothing wrong with my cooling system at the moment, its just that I want to upgrade everything else before I do any major engine work and so far I've got my suspension done and I've ordered my brakes. That just leaves cooling, which I have a few questions about...
1. Whats the differance between these to and which one is better?

http://www.eliseparts.com/shop/index.ph ... cts_id=240
2. Is it worth fitting an oil to water cooler? I've found the QED item to be alot cheaper than the Eliseparts item. Is one better than the other?
http://www.qednet.demon.co.uk/rk/oilcool.htm £195+vat
http://www.eliseparts.com/shop/index.ph ... cts_id=236 £275+vat
3. My radiator has seen better days (damaged cooling fins and sometimes a slight smell of coolant from the front after some rough love, leaking?) and eliseparts list 3 types. Standard, All aluminium hi pressure and All aluminium hi pressure uprated. I don't fancy putting a standard radiator on to replace my current one. Which one should I go for? I know the hi pressure one will be fine for what I need it for but I don't mind paying an extra £100 for the best one.

4. Will fitting any of this before I mod my engine cause any damage to my engine by over cooling it? I know these parts are a bit overkill, its just I don't want to throw a few grand at my engine to find it overheats and goes bang. Rather safe (and a bit more skint) than sorry.
Cheers,
Kev.

Re: Cooling system mods
Kev - you can buy (and modify) a PRRT kit direct from MGR/Landrover for less than the pre made kit.
Hose assembly (MGF Kit) - PCH003320 - £49.33 from Rover
Housing Thermostat - (grey 82* stat) - PEL500110 - £20.85 from Land Rover
Housing Thermostat - (dummy original stat housing to replace existing stat) - PEM000020L - £18.14 from Land Rover
Fitting guides on SELC*CK - http://forums.seloc.org/viewthread.php? ... 324&page=1 http://wiki.seloc.org/a/Fit_a_PRRT
PS - not done mine yet (still got other issues to fix first)

Thats handy to know. Is this the kit that fits in the engine bay? I have heard that there is a different kit that fits in the front of the car by the radiator??Matelotman wrote:Kev - you can buy (and modify) a PRRT kit direct from MGR/Landrover for less than the pre made kit.

Re: Cooling system mods
I would go for the Landrover fix, they spent alot of cash making it work...
Smells fin the cabin are heater matrix, you are very unlikely to smell the raditor as the cabin intakes are below it in clean air.

Sorry, I ment when I got out the car and was standing at the front, can't smell anything from inside the cabin.Rich H wrote:I would go for the Landrover fix, they spent alot of cash making it work...

Re: Cooling system mods
Housing Thermostat - (dummy original stat housing to replace existing stat) - PEM000020L - £18.14 from Land Rover ???
i dont know what this is but if its the dummy hollow stat, that is a silly price as its the same as the stat you take out with the centre missing so the housing can still seal i think i paid about £5.00 18mths ago and that was too much imo. i think i would try to snip the centre from any old stat and save a bundle next time
the grey 82 prt also has a lower rated spring designed for the k series
if you have an early elise with the top water rail ( runs along the head ) you will need the later lower water rail and also the r/h sill hose that connects to it from a scrapper
qed stuff is good but you may have to custom install a prt and oil / water cooler together
rad wise a lot of places do them with the alloy ends look to custom rad fabracitors
ps prt cracking mod imo

Mines a 1999 model so shouldn't have any problems with water rails being it the wrong place.hiscot wrote: if you have an early elise with the top water rail ( runs along the head ) you will need the later lower water rail and also the r/h sill hose that connects to it from a scrapper

I thought the prt worked on the coolant outlet of the engine?? The oil/water works on the coolant inlet so it will heat the coolant a bit before entering the engine (might help stop thermal shock a bit, maybe??...as well a cool the oil)

Re: Cooling system mods
Off work for a week from today so I should get the car completely done. The PRT kits are for the engine bay (and need some modding as in the fitting guides).ABZ-Elise wrote: Thats handy to know.
