In theory then it can be unplugged and unvelcro'd as required. This unit sits neatly in the recess on leaving the rear net free to be used

I might agree with you if I was trying to squeeze bass bins in every where and packing the doors with new speakers but that's not the case. The factory standard system sounds worse than cr@p. (I think my 2 speaker S1 system sounded better). The unit is velcro'd in and can be un plugged easily where required.

I use the car on a daily basis and now I can hear the radio when I go down the motorway.

I use a wonderful bit of kit that I got from Andy.. bluetooth stereo headphone thingy that links to the mobile and the ipod.

Even on full volume its hard to hear the stereo in mine...

Probably a better sounding solution but not sure on the legal point of view (driving with headphones on)??

I got the sub for £50 from Halfords (ex display Alpine) so felt i had nothing to lose. Almost sounds as good as a standard 'mass produced' car stereo now, not quite booming down the road to Scooter standard though..

Did you upgrade the speakers? If so what ones did you get? I have a head unit from my old car and was thinking of fitting that and new speakers. I definitely agree with you on the standard system sounding rubbish Don't think I'll go as far as a subwoofer though.

The system in both my cars were miles better after putting a DECENT alpine into them!

ive got an alpine subwoofer behind the pax seat velcro'd to the bulkhead.
it was with car when i got it.

as you say, its not overly powerful, but at least it lets you hear the radio instead of just a 'noise'
although some people have commented on my music taste as just a noise

Speakers are all standard Alpine in the MY08 car. I've removed the Alpine Head unit (see classifieds) and replaced with a Kenwood. The Kenwood has better USB and IPOD connectivity and as a bonus has built in Bluetooth Audio and phone (in built parrot module which works suprisingly well in the Lotus) it also sounds better which was not what I expected .

Halfords bought up all the UK stock of the kenwood 8041 all in one unit that I wanted, I managed to get it for £133 on their website as opposed to £229 in the shop.

They wouldn't normally be my first choice but they have served me well. Total of £188 spent for a decent sounding stereo with phone/bluetooth,USB hook up. Extra weight of 4 kilo's for the Sub unit but that's nothing a bit of a diet couldn't over come...

I'll maybe swap the Alpine head unit with the Sony one from my old car and see how that sounds first then

Worth a try as the Alpine head is very easy to remove. No special tools required..

1) Take off facia
2) Gently remove the plastic surround (2 clips at the bottom and top)
3) Halfway up each side you'll see the retaining catches. Slide up to the mid point and pull the stereo forward.

Standard ISO harness behind.. Sorry if 'm teaching you to suck eggs.

Thanks Peter , I was worried I might need a special tool like the Sony does. The Alpine came out quite easily, and the Sony is now in Had to do some re-wiring as the Sony had a different plug.

Bit happier with the sound now. Still not great, but I didn't buy the car for it's sounds system!

As far as I am concerned they are a bluetooth handsfree headset and that means they are legal and activly encouraged by he police.... deaf people dont get banned from driving do they?
