Puncture - Repair or Replace? - On The Road Again

Just got a puncture on the Edinburgh Bypass :(
Managed to limp home without causing any visible damage. But what I need to know is do I try to get the puncture repaired or should I replace the tyre?
The puncture was caused by a small screw which is still bedded in the tyre. I've not yet used the aerosal as a temp fix as I've heard that this makes it difficult to carry out a repair.
The tyre itself is 18 months old (Yoko) and has only done about 5k (road use) so is in pretty good nick (other than a screw sticking out).
Any advice appreciated.

It depends where the puncture is if they can repair it. Also depends on how long you drove on it as you may have overheated the carcuss in which case its foobard . If the sidewalls have gone that stressed brownish colour its knackered and I personally would not get it fixed .

If it looks ok then I dont see why you should not get it repaired . An expert will be along soon . :lol:

Duggie,

Running flat on the rim for any significant period will have caused damage to the tyre sidewall. Think you had better throw it.

The aerosol makes a mess and you may have been charged extra but the tyre would certainly have been repairable (depending on the location/nature of the damage). You would be better/safer to use the aerosol next time.

Not sure about this but if you use the aerosol i think the tyre is for the bin anyway.

Unless there is any damage visible when the tyre is removed, I would repair it. Willie @ CLCM in sighthill (around the corner from Murray Motors) will give you an honest opinion on whether or not the tyre should be repaired.

Nah, used it a couple of times and got repairs afterwards. No extra charge either (although, that just might be my tame tyre fitters) Foam is a bit misleading, as it's just like off milk, that congeals quickly in the hole to hold pressure.

Cheers for the advice.
I think I'll try a temp repair with the aerosol so I can at least get on the road (no 2nd car), then get myself off to CLCM. The more I think about it the more inclined I am to go for a new tyre anyway, just for peace of mind.
Anyone know if CLCM are open on Saturdays (or anyone else who would have the right tyres). From what I understand, I would need to go to MMC to get the original Lotus spec Yoko that's fitted just now. Would it be OK to replace with the same, non-Lotus spec tyre? or would I need to replace both rears?

Duggie, the guy in CLCM will vulcanize the tyres
Basically this is "rubber welding"
the repair will be the strongest part of the tyre. (Well, so they say)

I got my 330d rear tyres vulcanized when i got 2 screws in the corners.
Tyres are 255/35/18's and were only 3 months old.!!
Kwit Fit wanted £360 for 2 tyres.
Cos me £25 to get them vulcanized.

Bit late now, but no, he's not generally open at the weekends. He also won't stock whatever tyre you think you want to fit (he always says it's cheaper for you to buy it online), but Murrays are next door, so if it's a standard tyre they might have one I guess.

What tyre on what car? I have a bunch of random tyres that will get you driving while you wait for the proper tyres to arrive if you decide to replace the tyre ... but I bet you don't need to :-)

Decided to go for a new tyre after finding the old one was punctured twice.
Darren at MMC sorted me out this morning (Saturday) for £119 - seemed pretty reasonable - cheers Darren. :thumbsup
Next step was to get it fitted. I'd phoned National tyres during the week who said they'd do for £20 so off I went (it was the closest place open on Saturdays). Got there to be greeted by some dodgy looking character who was more concerened about talking to his mate on his mobile. He said they don't fit tyres not supplied by themselves. When I pointed out I was told otherwise on the phone. He just said "well I'm the manager and it's company policy".
I suggested maybe he inform his staff of his policy at which point he accused me of getting stroppy. Time for a swift exit. :x
Found a Kwik Fit half a mile along the road, who were only too pleased to fit it for £21. Done deal.
Main thing is I'm mobile again :D
