Funny Noise (not funny haha)
Funny Noise (not funny haha)
There is a funny noise, like something is loose coming from my rear driver's side wheel.
It doesn't happen all the time but every journey and loud enough to be audible outside of the car (heard Suzy coming up the street the other day) and seems worse when warm. It sounds like something metal is jangling, for want of a better expression, like a loose nut in a metal bowl being moved around. Almost seems in time with the wheel going round.
The same wheel seems to clunk going over big bumps in a way the others don't.
At this point I would like to nominate myself for the annual "Worst description of a noise leading to possibly the most pointless post in a serious category" award....
Errm vague as all that sounds, any ideas?

Re: Funny Noise (not funny haha)
Yup sounds like you have a problem with that wheel...
If its a "clunk" noise then I could bet its the pad and caliper moving about. It'll make a slight squeeling noise from the outside and inside it will sound like a rattle/clunk everytime you hit a bump on the road.
Easy fix with some anti-rattle pads from Eliseparts
Actually easy was to find out - Go out to the car - put both hands on the caliper and see if you can "jiggle" it about... If it moves at all - thers your problem

Very possibly wheel bearing at low speed. Does it growl as you pick up pace?

Re: Funny Noise (not funny haha)
I asked Ali to investigate my "jangling" when my car was getting serviced. Result was....... TADTS.

One of the heat shields? Sounds like a vibrating metal plate but is usually particularly bad a specific engine rpm?
Can normally be replicated when the car is stationary, if not then may well be a drive train issue.

Re: Funny Noise (not funny haha)
If it's an S2 it could be the secondary O2 sensor unwinding itself from the exhaust.
Also the two little metal wings that help support the clam/undertray in the lower rear wheel arches.
Pads tend to go clack-clack-clack whilst driving but will stop with application of the brake pedal, so if you can reproduce while rolling, press the brake pedal and see if it "goes away" - if it does then you know it the brakes.
The suspension can go clonk-clonk either damper noises or bushes.
The little solenoid in the charcoal cannister is often blamed as a weird source of clicking, and it would only come into play once the engine was warm.
Cheers,
Robin

Re: Funny Noise (not funny haha)
Nizzy diagnosed it by such controversial measures as "looking under the car" and "taking the wheel off".
Apparently the shocker shouldn't have oil pissing out the bottom.
I still say that using The Force (ie hearing a new noise and wondering really hard what it might be)is just as valid method of vehicle diagnostics but there you go
