Eratic Idle

Post by ray 0706 » Mon Aug 25, 2008 8:28 pm

It is not easy to go to publish how stupid one is but here goes.

Having not started my 111S for about a week and the battery condition not being great i was forced to use a small battery pack to start the car. In my usual "have to be somewhere 30m minutes ago" haste I connected the terminals of the battery pack to the wrong terminals of the battery (too dumb to live): (that also shows how low the battery and the battery pack was). Car turned over a few times until battery gave up.
Found my mistake when disconnecting battery pack and charged battery pack.
Tried again but not enough current in battery pack.
Bought new battery and fitted.
Started first time as usual but now at idle the revs hunt from almost 0 to 2000rpm constantly.

The link in the IACV info states that

"If this item is "suspect" the engine will have a very poor erratic tick over (if at all) and engine RPM will vary wildly from stall to 2000rpm." sounds like my problem.

Question now is whether the valve is suspect or the part of the ECU that monitors and controls this is faulty. Considering the jumper episode and the fact that the car ran ok before this I suspect the latter probably also because it is more expensive and sod law applies.

While this is most embarasing and not something I would choose to publish any help would be most welcome.

Guess I'm the only left here to answer

What your getting is perfectly normal - it's the IACV re-learning it's correct position. It should rev up (as described) and then incrementaly drop until it almost stalls where it jumps up again.

It's an iterative process so it will do this quite a few times - just leave it until it's settled down, don't be tempted to "assist" it with the throttle pedal as you'll just screw it up.

It should settle down by the time the engine is up to full temp (circa 82>) - if it's still doing it after that, then it's worth giving it a clean and then if it's still done you could have done some serious damage to the ECU during you cross polarity problem

thanks for the reply and sorry i should have added as i don't know if it makes a difference but with the ignition on the LCD instrument panel is fine but when it starts the instrument panel goes mental.

Hmmmm - I'm not sure.

See if you can borrow a ECU and see if that solves the issue.

When Robin is back from FF7 he will be able to offer some things to check!

If you don't hear from him in a week, bump this thread and he should pick up. He likes sparky things :-)
