Heat Shields

Post by paulW » Mon Sep 01, 2008 9:21 am

Hi,

Does anyone have any advice on best forms of heat shielding, to protect bulkhead from the exhaust manifold...

I am slowly getting cooked, and slightly worried that I am sat on a fuel tank that is getting heated to 200 degrees.

Currently bulkhead heatshielding has degraded, and appears to be ineffective.

Thanks

Paul

My heatshield is made from B&Q wriggly ali plate, seems to be OK, but the 'nimbus' stuff is the cows cock.
robin had some a while ago. Not cheap though.

(for clarification, that's nimbus and probably more expensive from Demon Thieves than Eliseparts!!)

Thanks :D

that stuff looks far easier to work with for covering the bulkhead. :thumbsup

Paul,

There are two "heatshields".

The bulkhead is covered in a single piece foam+silver foil affair (though early cars have fibre board bolted to the bulkhead instead). You can remove the engine and replace the entire foam+silver thingmy; it's not the easiest job in the world, but I've done it, so I know it can be done!

The exhaust manifold itself is shielded again by something that's a bit like 5-sides of a large cornflake box (one of the largest panels removed). This is of the fibre board covered in reflective tape variety and tends to disintegrate, especially when people work on the exhaust manifold and pull the shield in and out unsympathetically.

As the cars got older, they gained a couple more bent metal heatshields to protect the back of the alternator and the back of the cam pulley nearest the exhaust for #1 cylinder.

The S2 switched to a premoulded Nimbus-like shield instead of the fibre board box and a third bent metal one that bolts to the cross rail at the bottom of the engine.

Which of these bits are you looking to replace? If your car has fibre board on the bulkhead that is disintegrating, then replacing with nimbus makes sense, but you need to consider resonance and mounting options to make sure that it doesn't fracture around the mounts due to stress and just fall off. I might be inclined to bond it to the bulkhead using something like sikoflex. I am assuming the manifold heatshield itself is missing too - I would make another one out nimbus but bolt it to the engine, not the bulkhead - there are a couple of mounting points on the head and the block that can be used for this purpose. Failing that, a second skin of nimbus in the right place on the bulkhead, bent to shape to "hug" the manifold and with a reasonable air gap to the bulkhead to allow air flow up and out the grill at the top.

Make sure you protect the back of the alternator - this can be done by ordering up the alternator heatshield and bolts for the later engines - the mounting points should be there on all blocks. You could also press the S2 lower heatshield into service, which helps keep the fuel tank cool, though is mostly there to protect the lower coolant rail which your engine doesn't have (it has the up-and-over type I imagine).

Cheers,
Robin

I made a heatshield for my S1 out of a sheet of nimbus material, two parts, bulkhead main part and an engine mounted alternator shield . . . I could probably remove both quite easily and get you a pattern, I also have a sheet or two of nimbus kicking about . . . great stuff, very easy to work with, I bought it from some supplier somewhere, not Demon Tweeks or Eliseparts, probably cheaper than either . . . archive search for nimbus as IIRC I posted about it at the time I bought it . . .

It's lasted 20K miles so far and looks like the day I made it . . .
