Is my oil to thin???

Post by ABZ-Elise » Fri Sep 05, 2008 11:03 pm

I did an oil change on my car a couple of weeks ago and I've noticed that the head sounds a bit tappy now at higher revs. I used Mobil 1 0W40 which was listed for it in a book in Halfords. Is this oil a bit to thin for my car? Should I try changing to something else? My elise has got got 62000 on the clock so is getting on a bit.

0w40 is the right oil for the elise in this climate for sure. If you use it on track a lot you might consider a heavier oil, but not for mainly road use.

The hydraulic tappet flushes aren't bad and can sometimes quieten the tappety noise down a bit, so maybe worth a go.

Cheers,
Robin

As long as I won't damage my engine running 0W40 I'll stick with it for now. I've got a brand new head with new followers to go on it. I have stopped using my elise as my everyday car now and I do plan to do lots of trackdays with it now that its not my only car. When I do start doing more trackdays what oil should I change to? Will Silkolene Pro S 5w40 be ok or should I go for something else?

Thanks,
Kev.

I'm running Mobil 1 motorsport 15w-50 in mine. It's a decent oil and it's easy to get hold of. I've used it in most engines over the years and never had any reason to change.

With hiscot that 15w50 better for track use, especially if you don't have an oil cooler. Just make sure you warm the engine up gently as that stuff is much less runny at ambient temperature.

Only complication comes if it's a VVC/VVT/VVTLi, but I am assuming it isn't?

Cheers,
Robin

[Edit: meant to say with Mike, though am glad to see that in the end hiscot agreed anyway ;-)]
