Fitting a PRRT

Post by Rich H » Thu Apr 27, 2006 2:39 pm

Right to separate my oil leak from the PRRT fitting here is the story so far:

PRRT from a Landy dealer £48.80 + VAT

MEG Coolant £12 + VAT

Chop about the pipes.

Now it's ready to fit:

Pressure Relief Remote Thermostat.

Basically replaces the stat in the Elise (K powered) which has a design optimised for the smaller variants of the engine.

I'm not 100% sure on the operational variances, but it seems that the bypass on this stat is of a much lower pressure design.

This is one of the things that has been rumoured to cause HGF and a very good reason not to load the engine until it's properly warm....

The PRRT is a (Landrover) solution, by moving the location of the stat and changing the way in which it operates. The full lowdown is here http://web.tiscali.it/elise_s1/index.htm and it's a page worth a read for K series owners...

I'm at about the same stage as you Richard (except I haven't bought the coolant yet)

I blame my wife for having our second baba last week. (what did I do with all that spare time I had when we only had one....... :) )

Can anyone pls explain the following extract from the fitting guide to me really slowly....

"I enlarged the bypass duct inside the housing from 12 to14.5 mm to improve the heater flow. All 3 gaskets should be replaced, to minimize the risk of leaks. Apply silicone lubricant on the O-rings, then fit housing + coolant rail back in. To reduce the bypass flow on the old circuit and enhance the heater efficiency instead, I've placed a reducer (22 mm aluminium disc with 4 mm hole) at the bypass exit of the engine outlet spout. Please notice the fitting of this reducer is not suitable for some cars (A/C equipped and/or S2 111S)."

So.....Is the 22mm disc req'd/suitable for my S1 111s?

Shug...Did you enlarge the bypass duct & fit the reducer to the exit by'pass on your new engine???

No great rush on this as I am unlikely to have any freetime to work on the elise till sometime in 2009.

Nope - never bothered. It's going on about heater efficiency - if I find it cold, I mught do something about it. Alternatively, I may wear a hat ;)

Yes I know... :P

I was going to fit it today (Yesterday, look at the time!) but I had to gather bits of gearbox instead and ran out of time. I'll pick this up when I get back.
Just thought I'd make a start....

I looked at the reduction bits but (Like Sh*g) figured it was too much trouble and couldn't be bothered. Buy a warmer coat. :thumbsup

Incidentally, I've not noticed any deterioration of the heater efficiency, so I'd say that those mods are a waste of time...
