Although if you wanted to use this loophole (although why - anything that'd fail you in the engine bay, I'd rather know about) then you could always take off the diffuser to expose the jacking points and leave on the main tray.

I know there is a specific statement in the listing for the Elise that says to the tester that the trays have to be off (saw it with my own peepers) - whether that supercedes that guideline would be for a VOSA official to clarify...

Fook me!!! How can he justify that? I know he doesn't do the MOT but VOSA state the maximum charge is £53.10

I have seen garages that veil it as a "pre-MOT" inspection - guess they have to make some money out it somewhere if its not themselves that are doing the MOT.

Quite why anyone would take it to a garage, who then take it to another MOT station, get it done then drive it back to their garage for you to collect (and charge you more) is beyond me.

I would imagine he gets them at a trade rate (or should) so could charge the difference between that and retail rate.

I used to charge 0.25 hours labour and book the MOT out at the trade rate I paid for it. Meant the tests worked out at £46.75 to the customer and I made a tenner to cover the time taken to check the car and take it to the MOT station. Don't really make any profit but its a service to offer your customers.

That's the way I see it anyway.

£65 is taking the piss in my opinion.

While I appreciate that my MOT charge is not the cheapest available, due to the location of the MOT station dropping off and collecting a car can take up to an hour out of my day. The price of the MOT therefore cover the time taken to deliver/collect the car (at a considerably reduced rate) as well as any time required to sort out any minor issues which would otherwise result in an MOT failure. In addition, the relationship I have with the MOT station allows me to offer customers the up most flexibility in an attempt to provide an efficient service around the customers’ working day.

Fair enough. You have to cover costs.

I would be trying to supply a better value service though. Different MOT centre perhaps.

I guess its up to the individual if they chose to pay that much anyway. I wouldn't. :thumbsup

Colin did a lot of spannering for Scuderia Ecosse. That's the Stuart Roden connection I believe. As did John Donaldson, who was with us on SE dinosaurs but not sure if he runs a login here. John worked with Colin in the Tarduff garage occasionally IIRC. He used to live across the road from it. As did I until 1981!

The Tarduff lot are spot on, used to take my cars there before I left Linlithgow in the early 90s. Colin's Dad ran the show back then and although a grumpy git, he knew his stuff and Colin learned well. They used to race a Formula Ford at Ingliston, KH etc, and as a result when I took my Mk1 XR2 there for a tune-up, the results were mindblowing. Alexanders in Edin (remember them? - just houses and offices now!) used to do the basic service for me on the cheap, but their tuning had the car run out of puff at 5k rpm and flat spots everywhere. An hour with Roy and Colin and the thing was revving to the limiter and smooth all the way. Ah the heady days of Weber carbs

I'm a sentimental old fool at times and getting worse!

If I ever run out of favours with Robin and the other Spanner Meisters, or come into money, then Tarduff is where the Elise will go for anything from a rattle to an engine change. As well as being a family outfit, they are also very professionally run with a service manager, office admin etc, leaving Colin and the guys to do the excellence on the ramps. Need more of that around, IMHO.

I believe he also has maybe done Stu's (as in Mutts Nuts Stu)... because Colin was chatting away about a chap who used him that makes his own disks & tinkered on a laptop/ECU to get passed the emissions

Not the most attractive garage, and it's tucked away in an industrial estate that's hard to find... but hey... it passed & he didn't damage it :thumbsup

Hope that helps... Andy.
Another :thumbsup for Colin Brown from me, did two MoT's on my Elise, with me inside the car doing the controls etc. I think he has also done McKeans car in the past too.

It was Stu who recommended him to me.

Anyone used Citi Coachworks at Tollcross (Edin.)? Volvo needs an MOT and they're advertising at £24.95 :D .

(It'd have to pass though as for that money I wouldn't think you'd get a free re-test.... )

No experience of the garage, but ask yourself why a garage would offer a cheap MOT - would they be more or less likely to be very picky to get the remedial work...?
