Picked up the throttle cable from Murrays on Saturday. Got the following prices for those that are interested -

S1 £44.38 +vat
S2 £66.99 +vat
S2 £34.76 +vat ( Simplified linkage / cable clips directly to pedal. Appears to have changed mid 2003 )

Checked the cable location at the peddle end - looked ok so proceeded with the cable change.

Not quite the simple job I was expecting, very time consuming with lots of dismantling and fiddly, upside-down under the dash activity.

If you are attempting it this is the sequence I used  -

Remove rear undertray.
Disconnect cable at throttle body and from p-clips in engine bay.
Remove cover for gearlever / handbrake.
Remove front divider.
Remove passenger seat ( to access handbrake mech )
Disconnect handbrake cable at lever.
Remove handbrake lever. ( to allow cable to be routed properly )
Unbolt gearchange mechanism frame. ( to allow clearance for cable fittings. Cable is routed under front mounting )
Remove circlip at pedal end of old cable. ( I removed the cable mounting plate from under dash to do this but wouldn't do it that way again  Found it impossible to refit screws with cable in place and resorted to replacing with bolts from above which finally allowed me to locate mechanism in place)
Pull old cable out from under car.

To assemble reverse the sequence, or however it is so eloquently put by Mr Haynes .

Cable was definately the problem - throttle now behaving as it should. Old cable still has smooth action but much more friction.
