Things to do with some time off.

Post by DavieK » Tue Jan 20, 2009 4:03 pm

When I get home and get some time off I intend to have a look at a couple of things on the Elise and hope you can point me in the right direction.

Firstly selecting first and second gears is a real pain at the minute and its a random chance if you can find either of them. Most times its easier to find second and then it goes into first no problems its just getting it to the left in the first place thats the pain. Is this going to be a case of me being under the car adjusting the linkages while the boss moves the gear stick untill its nice and happy or could it be something worse? I had a quick look at the rubber bushs a couple of months ago whilst under the car for something else and they seemed OK but thats just a guess as ive not seen a new set before.

Secondly we stay in a new part of Ellon where speed bumps seem to multiply at an alarming rate but luckily the 160 clears all so far .... apart from one on the way to the house. It's fine when theres only the driver (either the Mrs or me) but when we are both in the car the front clips the front edge of the bump. I've read that a 160 on LSS is set in the factory at 100/110 but as the car is now coming up for 9 years old im sure it's probably dropped a little. So if I go to adjust the ride height what sort of numbers should i be looking to get? still 100/110 or aim for a little more?

Cheers

Davie,

Yup - best way to sort the gear selection is to get under there with a willing assistant moving the lever so you can work out what does what. Worth dismantling and re-building the linkage with some good spray-grease - bear in mind that you don't tighten up the nuts too tight as it all binds and you get no self-centring. You can get new bushes in nylatron and by all reports, it's a good upgrade. Linkage is one of those jobs I need to do to mine as well.

WRT ride height - the common wisdom is that 110/120 is a good compromise for our speed-bump littered times. It's what I run at anyway. Remember, changing ride height requires the geo being re-done ideally, although if it's been a while, it's a good idea just to get it all checked out as it does wander surprisingly quickly...

The Eliseparts linkage kit is a worthwhile buy. It's not too difficult to do, just a bit fiddly

IMO, the only really useful bit are the nylatron bushes in that... Can't see why the rose joints would be much better than the original balljoints unless they are shagged...

don't think you'd notice the rosejoints in use but they shouldn't break!

The linkage I took off my S2 had spherical bearing on it - the only difference was that the elise part kit came with a seperate nut/bolt rather than the incorporated one of the OEM

Even if it is just the bushes - it does make a hell of a difference!
