Plastic u bends at bottom of window

Post by skellyjohn » Wed Feb 25, 2009 2:24 pm

My passenger window fell in AGAIN yesterday. As has been mentioned before, I don't own a screwdriver or spanner so I got a mate to have a look at it. He said the problem seemed to be that the wee plastic clips at the bottom of the window weren't gripping the window in place and that I'd need new ones from Lotus.

So I called lotus this morning and they told tell me that the clips are bonded onto the window at the factory so I need to buy the window as well. This seems madness. Any other suggestions for fixing the problem?

Cheers,

J

This happened to me and I used araldite two part adhesive for glass and plastics. Never had a bother since.

I used some stuff nicked from BAe when my Dad worked there that they used to bond in aircraft windscreens. Although the Aradite stuff will do the job :)

That'll be PRC Petroleum Resistant Compound and no I can't get you any
Toxic, carcinogenic, marine pollutant and impossible to remove from skin.
Fixed the landrover fuel tank with some ages ago (It rotted elsewhere instead) is horrible stuff, comes in a mastic tube and you have to mix it together inside the tube. Had black/brown streaks on my arm for weeks.

PU adesive is the normal windscreen adhesive sold in motorfactors, cheap and more flexible than alraldite.

I have a bag of 3 of the plastic Ubends in a drawer in the house that I bought 3 years ago when I had my first S1 - yours if you need them and you can replace them at a later date.

I think he has them all though - it's just they need bonded to the screen. Even brand new ones won't grip the screen without being bonded on.

...suggested that Lotus were not forthcoming in offering said clips as a stand-alone part. The original ones on my S1 had weakened as well and were cracking, meaning they were not doing any gripping even with glue.

Offer is there if you want them John :thumbsup

Aye - totally mate, but the point is that he doesn't need to order new ones at all, just bond the window back onto the ones he has, that's all :thumbsup

Hi Guys,

I have fixed this more than once for john but as its been pointed out its NOT the clips that are fully away, Yes they have been on a the car and while
and are slighlty bent out of place with teh window falling out every 5 mins.
Its the bond from the clip to the window thats away.

Even with new clips there is still no bond to the window. . . .I do know that someone had used tiger seal on them before and
mad alittle mess (WAS NOT ME) but it never fully held the window in and now its just falling out all the time it gets wond down.

I called lotus 4 times today and got a diagram faxed to my work with the pics and it shows the clips come bonded on the window
and a window is £100.20+Vat each. They did say you did used to get the clips alone but now its a full thing.
