Front Splitters

Post by philthy » Thu Jan 08, 2009 12:19 pm

JJ and I decided to put together a plan for front spitters for our cars.
It is made from 6mm ABS Matt black plastic instead of plywood, it should last a lot longer and wont suffer from stone chips.
Its fixed on with 8 x M6 bolts and 32mm washers to spread the load when tight.

I am dubious about any perfromance gains but it looks the dogs danglies. :thumbsup
I'd like to make some for the S1/S2 elise for the general market if someone wants to donate a car for templating? Il make one at cost for them.

that would be good, at least for fixing points as I know the front clam doesnt reach as far forward as the s1 Exige :thumbsup

It has 3 raised parts that are moulded to the front clam the reason I have not fitted it yet is I was going to make special spreader plates.

are you going to fit brushes underneath ?

No brushes- dont see the point tbh as the splitter is mostly cosmetic

I've got an S2 you can template - though given it's missing part of the nose it may not be ideal - it's normally parked round from your office.

Reading that, I think it was more you and your project-finishing abilities that were up for discussion rather than the idea. Oh, and the fact its an elise

Go back and read the thread again - especially my observations about Elises and splitters. That still stands. On the Exige, the bodywork makes sense of a splitter - a point I'm sure I made while ripping the p*ss for your plywood & ripsaw idea

If you're gonna make a splitter work without horrendous drag on an S1, you need to blend it into the body, rather than just hang it off the bottom of the clam. It'll still technically work like this WRT downforce, but will cause barn-door drag.

I dont think the s2 elise will to work because the underside isnt flat at the front having looked at it in detail.
Also, to fit it easily to the S1 may be difficult unless you have very long arms to reach through the arch liners but not impossible.

I'm not sure about that, have a look at the first picture in this thread http://www.exiges.com/ubbthreads/showfl ... art=1&vc=1
As someone say's, it must be doing something. After the Edwards boys saw this, they increased the number of fixing points for their splitters. Don’t know how many you've gone for, but I think there's maybe 10 in total on the one I've got fitted.

I had looked at those photos before hand, and we put 8 fixings on spread washers along the front edge and used 3 of the 5 original fixings towards the back of the car, so 11 in total.

Nylon bolts and nuts mean they should shear before damaging the fibreglass.

Really pleased with the finish and look 8)
