Strange Sliding sound

Post by undone » Wed Mar 18, 2009 7:07 pm

HI all,

Had my wee elise for a week and a half now and she's an awesome drive - one problem I've noticed though is that when i accelerate sharply or break quite hard there's a weird noise that seems to be coming from the step* by the driver's door.

I don't think I've done anything daft, like not notice something sliding about on the floor but it definitely seems like something sliding along the step*...

any suggestions?

* I've called it a step cos i figured you'd all know what i mean - can't for the life of me think what it's actually called

cheers

Something could well be sliding up and down inside the sill (the step - I assume you mean the alloy side sill of the chassis?)

On an S1, removal usually involves getting the coin tray out (brute force + ignorance, it's glued) and getting a torch and seeing if you can see/fetch anything.

Yup, that 's the bit i mean. It's an S2 I've got - think the coin tray might be too far forward to be able to get at where the sounds coming from...

Ah - S2, bit more difficult to get into the sill - but I'll let an S2 owner fill you in... Did you buy from a dealer? Gotta be a warranty job to do...

As far as I know there are pipes (aircon/coolant) etc that run through the sills but they are a PITA to get at.....I had some gravel in there a year or so ago......braking got rid of it.
The glass fibre skirts are bonded on.
Your best bet is something stuck under your seat (coins etc) or something sitting on the undertray.....keep hoping!
Failing that buy a louder exhaust or turn up the stereo!

Check for money under your seat, even under the carpet . I found twenty pence when I was putting my drivers seat in today . ( Which must have been from a pax at Knockhill . If you can tell me what coins make up the twenty pence you can claim them back  ) Might be worth giving the under tray a tap see if you can hear anything rattling .

Twas fairly common in the S1, caused by a bolt or rivet that came away from one of the pipes running inside the chassis rail.

Solution was to brake hard so that it rolled to the front then prize out the coin holder to remove it.

Although it's harder to get into the S2 sill, it's also more likely that there's nothing in there. Try and look under the seat (wee mirror and a torch are handy), but ultimately you probably need to remove the seat to get stuff out ... I removed my seats and put some non-slip rubber mesh matting under the seat - it doesn't stop stuff getting in there but it does stop it all sliding about :-)

Cheers,
