S1 Tired Tyres

Post by hardrockjock » Wed Mar 25, 2009 1:06 pm

Time to make that small step for man.

Current Pirelli P Zero's 185/55/R15's on the front need replacing so..... proposals are to replace only front and remain with current format ie Pirelli 185's & 205's or replace all four with Toyo Proxes T1-R's at 195/50/15 & 225/45/16 or Kuhmo KU 31 195/50/15 & 225/45/16. The car is for road use only - no track. Any opinions/assistance as to choice, benefts, negatives will the tyres be "oversized" for the wheel etc much appreciated.

Original P-Zeros? Jings - you're a hero. Will be totally solid and you can't get them any more, anyway.

Current cheap replacement choice seems to be the Kumho - don't suffer so much from the soft sidewalls that afflict the Toyos. Both will be streets ahead of the P-Zero now though.

Lotus now recommend tyres in those sizes, so although they are bigger, they aren't big enough to cause an issue. The only tyres I think are available in original sizes are the Yokohama C-Drive.

I'd go Kumho...

I am looking to get prices on the Kumhos. After few discussions with McKeanne and other people I would suggest they are best value for money :thumbsup . They are for my S1 111s so I have 15's on front and 16's on the back. The owner previously has fitted tyres with slightly bigger profile than standard so I am going to see what Kumhos have to offer and take it from there!

I presume these are the Kumhos that you ordered, £185 delivered for four S1 sizes. KUMHO KU31 ECSTA SPORT KUMHO KU 31.

The KH track day that I did two weeks ago I was all over the place on 888 fronts and Maxsport rears in the rain/sleet, so would probably be better with these and hope that they could cope in the dry on N3.

I missed the discussion on these as I was not contemplating them, but what was the verdict?

Yep they're the ones. I really like them. Started off with old pressures from when I had BFGs on (23.5F, 24.5R). Felt a bit vague, but could've just been the dropping compound wearing off. Upped the pressures to 26F and 27R and they're spot on :D . Maybe done 3000miles since, and with the recent dryer/warmer weather there's plenty of lateral grip with none of the 'woolliness' that T1Rs used to give.

I'd defo. recommend them to anyone swithering.

As for you tut with more than twice the power than I've got I couldn't say, but Mckeann likes them and if they're up to the Ape then I'm sure you'll be
fine

HTH

\\oh yeah, forgot to add that they're great in the wet/standing water due to the hugemungous channels running round the centre section\\

Can't comment on the Kumhos, but what I would add is that I only ever ran the "original" tyre sizes and the car always seemed just right :thumbsup . Most recently these were toyo T1-Rs. They were fine on track and only ever went off on me once, but then I am no Mckean :P
