2006 S2 Elise - I started getting a grating noise from the brakes around December last year, but only when applying the brakes. Nothing drastic, just a metal on metal type sound. I checked the pads and decided that whilst not worn, they would be fairly soon so changed them (front and back). Since I changed them the noise has not gone away but is slightly less loud than it was. However, they have developed a new 'noise' which is there all the time and is fairly quiet but sounds like the disc is rubbing on the pads on every rotation (sounds like drivers front only but I may be wrong).
I've had the wheels off twice now to see if there's anything obvious. And I have removed the pads, cleaned everything up and still no change. Tonight I removed the wheels again and all I can see is that the front discs are not completely silver - suggesting the pads aren't completely in contact with the discs. I've not noticed any brake fade so I don't think that's an issue but what else can it be? (Rear brake discs seem ok and I think the noise is more from the front.)
I've got Redstuffs on the fronts and a mate thinks it could be that they are just too hard. I'm not convinved because as I said at the start, the noise was there before changing to the Redstuffs. Anyway, the original grating noise came back today, so all I seem to achieved is spending on new brake pads, learning how to change them
