Guys,
I'm almost finished changing the spring rates on my nitrons - but the last one won't split. (you need to unscrew the mounting part from the piston rod) Now I would imagine that the piston rod is some kind of moly chrome, and it has what looks like either a stainless or a mild steel nut at the top, the mounting eye is alloy.
If it was all just similar metal I would use a bit of heat - can I still do this - is there something I should be aware of before brandishing the blow torch - will I soften an already soft material?
any hints?
Mac

Re: Hot metal!
Be carefull
Heat the nut only.
Aluminium melts about 600 Degree's and it obsorbes heat quickly (and takes an age to cool one of the reasons it's a pig to weld)
I take no responcability if you feck it though

Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....
Re: Hot metal!
I would also watch out incase the piston is plated .....
a story comes to mind ... when i worked in our workshop we had 2 ovens for heating parts gently withough the use of a big propane/oxy torch and one day whilest heating some bits that had been plated up, one of the guys (as was often the case) stuck the pie he had for his dinner in the oven and cranked it up only for me to find this out too late with bits of the plating on the bottom of the oven and over his pie where it had pinged off the bore of the sleeve
