Hi Pete,

Yes, a straight edge and feeler gauges is the best way. Ideally liners should protrude 0.004" (~0.1mm) above the surface of the block. Anywhere between 0.002" and 0.006" is generally ok. All four liners should be of equal height and each one should be checked in four places to check for tilt.

Liners can be replaced but requires stripping the bottom end. It is a straightforward job once stripped. If the liner heights are uneven you can deck the block so they are all high and then use grinding paste to get them all down to the right height. I bit of a pain to be honest.

Get accurate measurements of all four liners before getting the block decked as this is not a quick (and therefore not a cheap) job.

If you need any more advice give me a call on 07834 732892.

Cheers

Thanks G, phoned Scholar direct. That's a whole lot of money for an engine they haven't made for 4 years! Helpful chap though...

Do it once do it right.

OK in this instance that should be do it once then do it again right.

Block's on a pallet and off to Scholar for new liners.... DVA have given the head the all clear.

Why's it going to Scholar Pete?

Are you going 1900 bottom end or just having the standard liners replaced?

Cheers

So why is it going to Scholar? Its a straightforward job. I reckon you could probably do it yourself. I take it its getting new shells and rings too?
