Alternator Wiring

Post by Mikie711 » Sun Apr 05, 2009 1:58 pm

Can somebody with an S1 tell me which way round the 2 wire go on to the alternator. Forgot to look before I took it off and can't remember which way round they should be  . Think the larger of the 2 goes to the inside an the warning light wire to the outside but better to check. Oddly there is no mention in the service manual that I could find.

Long time ago since mine burnt through Mike, but are not the two connectors of different width?

Mike,

Just had a look at my old engine, as Tut says they are different and it's the actual threaded stud's that come out of the alternator which are different. From memory the holes on the wire connectors have different ID's to match.

Both the studs are the same thread, and one wire is thicker than the other. Just can't remember which way round they go.

Ones a large gauge brown wire that comes from the starter, not sure about the smaller think it's brown and yellow.

That's what I thought and means my alternator is probably toast  . Charge warning light stays on, will have to put a volt meter across it to confirm.

Don't know if you got it fixed but here is my old engine with all the wiring still connected. Thinking about selling the engine in bits, so if your looking for an Altinator send me an email.

Cheers

Thanks for the replies, got it sorted. The main lead captive nut had gotten lost along the way and I had used a normal M6 in it's place but the horns that keep the original nit in place prevented a socket from fully tightening the new nut. Cut off the horns, tightened it down all the way and the charge light went out :thumbsup .
