Coolant fans and sender

Post by knightofni » Mon May 11, 2009 5:07 pm

I may be going mad, but I'm sure my cooling fan used to cut in at somewhere about 96-98 previously, but recently it doesn't seem to be happening. I let it go (very briefly) to 106 once sitting in traffic before turning up the heating full to bring it down. Later that day it cut in about 98 or so. The other day I let it go to 100 before turning up the heating. I kinda gather from here that the fan probably doesn't come on until over 100, but just how high is safe and which/where is the sender to replace to make sure it activates when it should! 111R BTW.

From what I've read its normal for them not to kick in until 104 - 105'C presumably set there for the best econpmy and lowest emissions
was a thread about it just last week

Thanks, had read that, maybe should just have added to that thread, but shouldn't it be on by 106? Does anyone know whats the highest safe temperature to let it run to before I should turn up the heating?

If it gets too hot the displayed temperature will start flashing - I think that happens at about 110

It'll be fine at 120 (but it shouldn't reach 110, so turn off at 110), but what car do you have?

Cheers,

Its an S2 Exige. I've only seen it do it once after a rather spirited drive - turned the engine off too soon before giving it a chance to cool down...starting it back up brought the temp down straight away

Cheers guys, feel somewhat better if it can reach those figures without damage!
