Brake Refurb -some Q's

Post by james » Wed May 13, 2009 12:17 pm

Chaps

Im in the midst of a brake refurb - disks, pads, hoses.

Reading the elisenet.com how to on stainless brake hose replacement it says to use http://www.permabond.com/ to hold the front caliper retaining bolts.

Is this stricktly necessary? I have done brake reassembly before on other cars and its never been mentioned?

Also - is it worth replacing the cheap little extra bits like the pad retainig pins, anti rattle shims, nipples etc. Or am I being too fussy (I did wash the inside of my wheels yesterday which might answer that one.)

Thanks in advance.

I thought the permabond was more for the alloy uprights on S1s...

Not sure with the S2 TBH - for what it's worth, I've never used it.

If you buy it from eliseparts you get the wee fiddly bits included:

Worth searching the archives, I did my front callipers a year or so ago using the Elise parts kit.

Using Permabond A131 is both to stop galvanic corrosion between differing metals (steel bolts into ally upright on the S1 like Shug says) and to use as threadlock.
It's a good idea to use it. You can get it from http://www.glueline.co.uk/ and http://www.lawson-his.co.uk/ more cheaply than from Permabond's site.

Thanks guys, I had thought about using the Eliseparts refurb kit but £200 plus for 4 calipers is a bit steep and they dont leak anyway.

I'll get the permabond just to be on the safe side.
