PTP RS140 Upgrade - S2 K-Series

Post by Doc883 » Tue Jun 16, 2009 1:53 pm

Hi, anyone any experience of the RS140 upgrade from PTP ?
Looks reasonable value at £509 incl vat for a 20bhp increase :) although I'm guessing that pre-requisites to achieving that sort of figure are sports exhaust, sport/de-cat and induction kit.
How much would the likes of SLS charge to install this upgrade ?

Thanks

Yep... I did this very upgrade... but do yourself a favour & buy the kit seperately yourself like i did...
Was less than half the price quoted from PTP.
No need for sports exhaust or Cat (I never)... but I did put a K&N57i on.

Ali also fitted the cams for me, but I couldn't say the price because I had it fitted at the same time he was doing the cam belts.

I'll try & find some posts about mine...

Cheers Gorrie. There's a garage in Deadridge that specialise in MG Rover. My neighbour owns the unit next door and says he quite often sees Lotus Elises there, recall him saying that the owner had a green Elise. anybody on here :D
Might pass in by for a chat.

Stu Pollock - Stu160 on here.

It's an engineering company, but he dabbles in some awesome bits for the cars (brakes being a key one). Worth a PM, but he's not a service garage.

Anyone heard from Stu recently? Last I heard he'd taken the 160 off the market and was going to keep it and give it a good going over. Wonder how he's getting on...

Got some discs off him recently and he machined flywheels for me and Hambo. Yup - keeping the 160 and doing a number on it. Gonna go back to his UCR box and slap his ninja engine in there.

Seemed well - he lurks on here quite a lot :)

Central garage in the same estate is probably the place that's been talked about for doing the work rather than Stu, unless he's branching out, but can't see Anne being too happy about that!

That's a fair point mate - I knew that they did Rover stuff as well, as that's where my replacement head ended up coming from on the last engine.

I'm assuming it's just a pair of cams?

You can get a pair of 270's from eliseparts for 313+VAT or from DVA for perhaps a little bit less.

You should use at least one vernier, but I'm sure it will run without verniers.

You may as well do a belt at the same time and so your next C-service will be a fair bit cheaper.

Don't change the air box ... save your money for a 4:2:1 flexi manifold which will go nicely with the cams.

Cheers,
Robin

P.S. Just checked out the kit - you don't need the TB - it makes near-zero performance difference even at higher outputs (170+) - so deffo worth buying just a pair of cams.

P.P.S. You can improve the throttle response of the standard throttle body with some fettling of the butterfly valve (remove the shoe that's bolted to it).

When I fitted the MGTF 135 cams and the 135 cylinder head I lost all torque low down :( the 4-2-1 manifold recovered all that with the added bonus of....

There's minimal torque loss if putting these R140/MG135 cams in a standard head though.. I can vouch for that.
I kept the standard head, and the plastic plenum. I did fit the 52mm TB though along with a K&N, but that was really just for a bit of sooky noises.

The benefit of these cams is price.
Firstly, to buy, they are considerably less expensive than Pipers (unless you do something silly & buy them from PTP).
Secondly, they are not wild enough to necessitate looking at pulleys or ECU... they just slip straight in place of the standard cams. So that's a potential saving.

They are tried & tested in the MGTF as well.. with the same block/head as far as I am aware. No idle problems, no noticeable loss of power low down... just free revving higher up the range. I wouldn't get them fitted for power alone, as it's not really a massive amount... the main benefit is that the delivery is more linear, in a similar manner to the Lotus 135 head on it's own IMO.

As Robin says though... makes sense to tie in line with a cam belt change to minimise labour costs (I'm sure it only added something like £30-£40 labour on top of the belts I was having done).

Andy.
