Elise parts interchangeability

Post by Landcrab » Wed Sep 16, 2009 6:46 pm

Hi folks, this is my first post (and it's a good-'un) so please be gentle with me!!

I may have the chance of a damaged s2 Elise which I wish to rebuild PURELY for track work and sprints. There will be no winscreen, lights etc, in fact nothing that is not required to make it move. The problem is, the car has been robbed of lots of parts, and I have a budget of next to nowt (winning formula if you ask me!). I am hoping the parts bin approach will help out! My questions are:

Are the front and rear hubs the same?
Will vectra hubs fit (VX220 - there is logic here)? This would allow me to use GM brakes and wheels to begin with until funds allow.
Will an MGF engine, gearbox and driveshafts bolt in? (the car did have a K-series).
Will an s1 front clam fit an s2 chassis (at least roughly - I can wield the fibreglass and alloy where needed!)?
Are wishbones common between s1 and s2? can they be acuired at reasonable cost?
Am I off my head??

I know an MGF engine and ecu will have a different map, I will lack a CR gearbox, and that vectra brakes will affect unsprung weight, but since I don't have an original elise to compare with I doubt I will either notice or care - and everything can be improved at a later date.

Over to you chaps!

If it is a bare as you say it is, it would be cheaper to buy an undamaged one. Bearings are mk4 astra jobbies but the hubs are lotus items as are the brakes. I really don't think vauxhall brakes will fit. S1 and S2 wishbones are the same dimensions but have different damper mounts, drive shafts are different to. Really not worth the hassle!

Thanks guys

The internet can be misleading at times, and has allowed a daft idea to become dangerously close to fruition - thank god I asked here before i blew the cash on a pup. Time to start combing the classifieds and saving the pennies!!
