How low can I go on trackday tyres

Post by smitstui » Fri Sep 18, 2009 8:25 am

How low is is safe to go on a set of R888's? Obviously its for track use only, but I still dont wont to blow them out!

The backs are bald in the middle with a couple of mm at the edge

Correct me if i'm wrong but isn't bald in the middle = running too high pressure?

I'm no expert, and i'm sure someone who is will be a along in a moment, but surely a tyre won't blow out unless you are right down, possibly past the part where the threads start to show?

I've always assumed the road legal limit was more to stop people potentially using tyres in the rain with no water moving capability.

I could be wrong of course!

I have seen mine finish a track in a far worse state than that but I wouldn't start another trackday on that tyre.

Thats what I wasnt sure about, was going to use them tomorrow!

I guess tyre pressure may be to high if they are worn in the middle.

You could probably run them for a session or two, see how they are holding up then swap wheels over (assuming you are taking a spare set) or get Ronnie at Wheelsaround to fit new ones. You could end up losing an hour of tracktime though.

Bald bit in the middle is due to over inflation.

Ps, the way i usually judge it is if the tyres are borderline road legal to get me to the track then they should generally make it through a coolish 4 hour session. They will be very illegal at the end or possibly through to the thread if it is hot.

I dont think Ronnie is going or thats exactly what I would have done.

I could take my trailer (and more tyres) but I am not sure if my car is insured when its on a trailer (somethining I never considered until recently).

I am just going to ignore that.

I havent been so insulted since yesterday in the gym when the lady on front desk asked 'are you pregnant?' - answered no and she said 'are you sure?'

Just checked with my insurance - car is definitely covered when its on a trailer - so thats the answer.

Would not want to get through to the thread - or steel; they very quickly become very damaging to the car in that state.
