Is my wheel about to come off?!
Is my wheel about to come off?!
Since I was up at knockhill on Saturday I have developed an intermittant "slapping" noise from my front left wheel that changes frequency with speed.
I took the wheel off to have a look and couldn't see anything, cleaned the brakes and things put the wheel back on and the problem seemed to disappear.
But it keeps coming back, I thought it was maybe bits of melted rubber coming off the track worn tyres but it keeps happening and only on the one wheel.
Does any one have any ideas what this could be, discuss.

Re: Is my wheel about to come off?!
Probably the brake pads being lifted and then dropping back into the calipers by either some material deposits on the disk or the grooves/holes if you have that type of disk. Next time it's doing it, maintain constant speed and _gently_ press the brake pedal with your left foot. If the noise goes away and then comes back when you take your foot off the brake, 95% likely to be the pads.

Re: Is my wheel about to come off?!
I very often get a "slapping" sound from the tyres after a session at KH.
In my case I'm pretty sure that it is, as you suggest, lumps of rubber picked up from the track unpeeling and slapping on the wheelarch liners. In can be quite loud but generally disappears after a few seconds, possibly reappearing later as another lump peels off. The left front and rear tyres should be the most heavily affected as they will tend to get hotter on track and pick up more rubber. Can you still see globs of rubber on the tyre?
I occasionally get the pad knocking / chatter that Robin refers to - but this sounds quieter, is less rythmic and is generally more obvious at lower speed.

Yeah still a bit "globby" ( I like that word and will try to use it in everyday conversation) and worryingly has some cracks in the tread. I'll have a go in the morning to see whats what

Perhaps the tyre has delaminated? If so don't try at speed!

Re: Is my wheel about to come off?!
Just added that word to my Dictionary, first time that it has been used.

I just checked to confirm I hadn't invented ittut wrote:Just added that word to my Dictionary, first time that it has been used.

Seems to be of US origin so I probably picked it up there.
Glob
–noun
1. a drop or globule of a liquid.
2. a usually rounded quantity or lump of some plastic or moldable substance: a little glob of clay; a huge glob of whipped cream.
- I'm sure the usual suspects will be able to make good use of it in the future

Glob definitely, but lovely as it sounds, I don't think globby made it into the Cambridge Dictionary.

Re: Is my wheel about to come off?!
Nor the OED. BTW, the OED has a word of the day, so I thought I would click on it to perhaps get a new word to post here ... guess what today's word of the day is? Record. I ask you, how can that be "Word of the day".
However, globby is a good word and if we use it enough on here we'll soon see it appear ... they've just finished revising the RE... section, so only another 10 years or so before they get around to the GL.. section - plenty of time to organize a campaign of attack

Re: Is my wheel about to come off?!
problem away, tyres are less globby, obviously just worrying myself.
I wonder if we could make globby specifically for lotus tyres, track tyres in general or do we share it with the world for all globby applications?
