Gaz Gold Pro's

Post by Stumpy Nugget » Wed Oct 21, 2009 10:02 am

Basically, my car is in my garage with bugger all connected to the front of it, Steering rack away to get refurb, dampers out, wishbones cleaned and painted etc, etc etc... However I am now at the best bit - buying bits.. So here is the question.

Do I simply buy another set of Bilsteins to replace my old ones or do I go for Gaz gold pros. The Gaz get a good write up and offer more features than the Bilsteins. They come in about the same money and I dont want to go for Nitrons as I dont think I will use them in anger enough to justify the price.

So is there anyone who can offer me a little advice on what I should be doing? Dropping height? Dampers? etc.. based on what they have done in the past.

The 2010 plan is to try and get in some track days along with the Nurburgring later on in the year, but most us of the car will be on roads at weekend.

My current thought is Gaz, with no drop in height - (I like the blue colour)....

PS: it is a 2001 K S2 I have.
Cheers..

Having fitted a few sets, I am totally unconvinced about the Gaz Golds. They don't even seem to be able to get the damper and spring lengths right so god knows what the valving is like. (I haven't tested them properly but didn't feel great on a road test)

Why does the image work in "preview" but not on the board :?

Not sure these are available? but if they were then I would be certainly tempted. Looking at what options I have available now it really only comes down to Bilsteins or Gaz since the nitron shiney bits are still out being tested.

You could always bolt on whatever you have and replace the dampers when the ones you want are available ... it's only a two spanner job to swap them later.

Its an option, but I have a hard stop in January since I need an mot and the dampers that I currently have will certainly fail. Not sure Nitrons (pikey version) will be available before then. Anyone heard anything when they are likely to be available?

Given a choice between Gaz and 2 bits of cut down broom handles in place of dampeners I would take the broom handles. Buy 2 second hand billy's to get you through your MOT if the nitrons aren't ready, if they are buy them. If you don't you will always wish you had waited or use broom handles

I was in the same posision as you're when I first got my elise. I changed all my bushes, balljoints, updated my toe links and had all my wishbones powder coated. Then when it came to buy the suspension I went for the cheap option (billies) which was fine for the road but useless on track, I then ended saving up for a couple of months and bought Hoffmans spec Nitrons. They're ace on the road and even better on the track. They might be 3x the price of billies but I still think it's worth paying the extra cash for.

I hit the button and ordered a set of Billys... I decided there was enuff bad press from various forums to say that Gaz were not for me. I decided that Billies at least give me a cost effective option for the road and if i do manage to get to the point where I need to improve things on a track then Nitrons are the way to go along with the other gubbins that go with track performance improvement. For the moment I am going down the restoration option rather than the upgrade one. Thank again for all the help.
