no heat!

Post by ticktickboom » Sun Oct 25, 2009 1:44 pm

2004 Elise S2 111S (no air conditioning)

right ive been through the wiki and i believe it could be to do with the flaps in the heater but here goes

i cant get the blower to blow warm air. it blows. but always cold.

so this is what ive done so far
- took the service panels off and removed the pipe to get a look down into the workings and i can see immediately one flap (wont budge - in cold position) and putting my hand down into the depths i can feel for another flap below first flap which does move easily, but doesnt move with changes to the controls inside the cab. ive wd40'd the hinges as best i can. and have checked the wiring of the controls in the cab but all seems ok.
- have tried to prise the upper flap into a different position but its firm and wont move.
- had considered the fuses but referring to my standard issue manual it mentions a 25amp fuse in the 12th slot, but there is no metal socket for an amp to fix into here and so is left empty.
- the 2 fat pipes running into the heater are warm when engine is running so obv warm water is going into them (as i understand it)
- ive wiggled the wire that supposedly links the flaps to the knob in the cab (see picture below - this is what i can see)

Ive never worked on this stuff before and really this is the first time ive had a PROPER hoke about forward of the steering wheel so im quite ignorant about this, and probably most things tbh!

so is this more likely to be a problem with the actuator?

random question 1: is it normal for there to be various wiring connections NOT connected to anything?
random question 2: there is a box branded TRW with various wiring going into it, its about the size of the fag packets put together, anyone know what this is? picture to follow if required. its not held down and looks relatively 'new'.

Cheers for any advice.

going by the wiki, could the problem also be the actuator?

As you will see from that clicky link, I replaced my resistor pack about 7 weeks ago. Scraped knuckles have almost healed

As far as the flaps moving, the change is slow enough to watch. With service panels and main pipe to dash removed, the flap is visible. Set your dial to the max cold position. Now turn it to quickly to max hot and jump out the car and look at the flap. You have enough time to see it slowly move from one side to the other. Should help rule this in/out. If resistor is gone the blower may still actually work but only on one or two settings. With ignition on, listen carefully as you change the fan speed settings on the dial and make sure the blower speed increases/decreases accordingly. If not, it will be your resistor pack. The age of your car looks about right for this to have given up.

As for your random questions;
1) Yes there are 2 or maybe 3 plugs that just hang loose in there that look like they should be connected to something, but aren't.
2) Don't know what the TRW box is. Johncam's pictures are pretty good and the resistor that has 4 wires going into it isn't visible from looking through the service panel, as well as being stamped SPAL, so isn;t that. Don't know what this is I'm afraid.

Hope some of this helps !

ok
the flap doesnt move
and the blower works on all 3 speeds

or is the problem a dodgy actuator?

below are the pics of that box i mentioned.

seems this is possibly the answer: an a/c control relay of some description...but i dont have a/c, just a regular heater...that doesnt work.

Sounds like your resistor pack is OK so increasingly likely to be your actuator. Don't think that can be done without the clam coming off though :( . I see the wiki mentions removing the heater unit which I would think is nigh on impossible via the service panels given the fight I had just to get mine turning 90 degs for access to the blower.
I can't remember seeing that TRW box but does look like the part on your link so probably something to forget about if you don't have a/c.

This is the point you start getting annoyed at how stupidly some parts of your Elise are put together...if you hadn't reached it already
