Well its a runner.. suppose I should run it gently?

Post by Victor Meldrew » Sat Oct 03, 2009 11:56 am

The light at the end of the tunnel. The engine has turned in anger for the first time since its rebuild. Still to get the rear clam quick release mounts and wing chassis mount bits sorted out yet but its almost there.

I have had advice about the best way to run it in from loads of people and most of it is pretty similar.. you can split it into three distinct trains of thought..

1. Rag the nuts out of it straight away.... (Aye right  )
2. Drive for an hour at a time, first at 3k, then at 4k, then at 5k, then at 6k, and its run in... (still sounds a bit aggressive but it works for Walshy)
3. Steady driving with low rev limit for at least 1500 miles..

What do you think..?
Well it moves... might as well make the most of it....

Drive it as you would along back roads but without revving the bollocks off it. That way you have straights and different radius bends, so you are changing gear, throttle openings, braking, speeds, gradients etc.

Worse thing you can do is drive down the motorway for hours at 3500 rpm.

Option 3 - but gradually increasing the revs used ( as in option 2).

I'm an option 1 kind of guy

Modern engines should have good clearances so the bottom end should be fine where as the rings need to bed into the liners so give it death

There you go John, pick your way out of that. Mine would have to be added as option 4.

Did mine the way tut suggested, building the revs up over a period of about 700 miles. Moix of short runs with a couple of 250 milers mixed in.

Well so far I've done around 350miles.

The first bit (150miles) was on a sedate paced road run round the back roads around Aberfoyle keeping the revs below 5k, full throttle opening feathering it off as the revs climbed.

The next few miles was on a run up to Aberdeen for work. Reasonably sedate cruise on the A90 with some back road action on the way home. Staring to let the engine rev a bit more now on part throttle. Allowing it to climb gently up to 7k with about 40% throttle opening to keep the load down.

Also drove up to Aberdeen in it this week as I'm offshore again. By the time I get back after the drive home it should have done a good 500 miles. No oil used as expected.

With the "running in oil" (5-40w I think) the oil pressure when hot (95deg) is still in the 55-65 psi range at 3k. It drops to 25 psi at 1k idle. I expect it to be quite a bit higher when I change it out for Silkolene Pro R 15-50w.

The idle is great normally, but it cuts out when its below 5degC outside, as it was last night when I left the house. So maybe the temp correction map doesnt go down that far. Not an issue after it is properly warmed up.

Cant wait till its ready for a thrashing..
