Hope that you get her fixed in time for the weekendmac wrote:Well it's BBQ time around the back of the alternator!
The two thin wires leading to/from the alternator are fried and broken and the multiplug at the back of the unit has melted too![]()
So it's off to euro alternators in the morning and hope they can fix it - then it's a search for a new multi-plug and finally splice in some new wires and cover in heat resistant material.
All this and work tomorrow so we can leave early on Friday for the run.

Re: Electronic Failure - whats the cause?
any clue as to why they have fried??
Wire damaged > Short > Fried, or something more sinister?
The insulation was completely gone, so definitely a short at some point, hope its something simple.
Sure you'll get it sorted
Good Luck

Re: Electronic Failure - whats the cause?
The "seat" of the "fire" is located very close to the multi-plug on the rear of the alternator.
I'm working on the theory that the alts pushed out to my current/volts/amps(delete as applicable) which has cause the wires to overheat.
There's actually two wire in the heatshield - on that we saw and the other was burnt back much further. Both wires are quite brittle for another 50 - 60mm back from the point where the burnt through.
So - Euro alternators, when they open, halfords for some wire (not sure of the gauge tho) and then try and find a multi plug!

Re: Electronic Failure - whats the cause?
The alternator's toast - offical - from the guys that I use to rebuilt things like alts & starters.
Got a re-con unit (which is what they do) for £80 with a years warrenty so can't complain.
Euro Alternators in Cambuslang if anyone is ever needing their services.

Re: Electronic Failure - whats the cause?
Yeah, when mine went, it went pretty much totally too. To the point that the casing had cracked and bearings felt like twisting a drill into stone by hand...
Ended up just splashing on a brand spankers one for £140 given the heat and revs mine takes (remember reading somewhere that they're actually overspeeding when taken over 6K revs in the K install). Dare say I'd have been fine with a recon as well, TBH.

Re: Electronic Failure - whats the cause?
mine span ok - just thing it was the internals that weren't playing ball.
These guys are good - do mainly commericals and it's pretty much new electrics with maybe cut back commutators to keep the cost down. reused casting after a sandblast so look the biz!
New one for the S2 is bloody expensive - about twice the price of the S1 version!

Re: Electronic Failure - whats the cause?
Hi all,
I just bought my first s2 and love it to bits, but the exact same thing happened to mine the other day, alternator multiplug fried and i was wondering if any one had a source for a new multiplug or would i be better going to the breakers for one?
I wanted to fit a new multiplug first then check the charging,
I checked the receipts that i got with the car and it had a new alternator and multiplug just over a year ago for the same problem.
thanks.
