Thirsty car.

Post by pete » Thu Nov 26, 2009 10:29 pm

Suddenly after a bliss filled, incident free, couple of months of Elise driving it got all thirsty. A litre of water it took. And then a short trip to Glasgow and it seemed to need more.

Sure it's fine. Nothing to worry about. It's just thirsty. I get that way sometimes too.

Mine too pete... I was loosing coolant, strange temp fluctuations, tank nearly overflowing with water when hot, looking empty when cold... All about 6 weeks after my rebuild.

Turned out it was a faulty tank cap :damnfunny

Yours could be too :blackeye

Shut up! It's not that.

It's just been tired and errm water has you know moved around a bit. Maybe evaporated. It'll fix itself. It's just paranoia.

Yeah, change the cap again before getting twitchy - I had one that went duff in weeks once.

I had that, mine was because my rad had burst and was leaking under pressure.

With the other possibles, if no one says it, it can't be true...

Had a look at pete's oil and water tonight and everything seems fine there, took the plugs out and they looked normal no steam cleaning.

My money is on a leak, one that only apears at high revs.

at this point I would like to mention that I program CNC machines /work out how things are made for a living and I am not infact a mechanic.

You might get such a leak when warm, but more likely it's when under pressure. It should show up if you pressurize the expansion tank, e.g. using an easybleed type of thing - be careful not to over do it though - the system is good for a few PSI over atmospheric pressure only.

Cheers,
Robin

Speaking with pete last night the car sat in his garage for 30 mins idleing away with no change in water level. When Mrs pete took it to Glasgow the level dropped.

pete I have an easybleed somewhere, if you pop the undertray off we can then check for leaks.
