Malfunctional Indicator Light

Anyone got any advice about what to do if the MIL comes on (2007 S2).
I was driving back from Auchterarder on 24th Dec when the light came on about 15 miles from home. The car felt absolutely fine and when I got home and turned it off then started up again, the light still came on. I've also tries disconnecting the battery, but am still getting the light.

I suspect it may be a trip to MMC, but I'd imagine there won't be much chance of them being open this week, so will it still be OK to drive? Not planning on much, just a few local trips.

It'll be fine to drive - its only if it starts flashing that you want to pull over asap. If the original fault that triggered it has cleared then the light will go off after something like 6 starts of the engine - the fault code will still be stored so can be checked at any time by any friendly garage with an OBDII reader.

It's not flashing so I'll keep driving (if I can get out, currently under 6 inches of snow) and hope the light goes out soon.
It's due a service in a couple of months. Perhaps they can they check the fault then.

How does a code reader work? Do you just connect it up and it tells you what the fault is/was, or is it more complicated?
Like I said earlier, the car is running fine, so I'm not too concerned, but it would be interesting to know.

Don't think I'll have time to do anything until the New Year though and that's assuming I can even get the car out (still snowed in here and forecast isn't great - getting used to walking places now). If the light stays on, I might take you up on the offer.

Iv just got a MS509, [£85] won't talk to my S1 160, but should get the fault code off your car. Im near Stirling if it helps.
