Try the ball joint test and see what you find. The only other option is bushes really, but I would douby they would creak as they are rubber if OE.
Other option is to disconnect the shock and try and move it by hand. PITA really. Is it worrying or annoying?
Just turn up the radio?

My car used to have exactly the same symptoms. I convinced myself it was the rear toe links, even had them on order (for months) from MMC (never yet received them) then I sold the car.
When Lee fitted the S2 suspension he noticed that one of the rear ball joints was shot so changed it. Since then the knocking is gone.
I was told that you could check for a gubbed toelink by holding onto it whilst somebody pushed the back clam up and down. i did this and could "feel" the clunk.
After reading this back I realise that it is not much help
