well i've started it up 3 times now and taken it out for a spin to get it up to temperature and it's maybe getting better! lol, it's hard to tell could just be wishful thinking on my part.
i've got the temperature sender thing anyway so may as well bang that in too.
engine management light is still on too

Let it idle for a good while - like 10 minutes or so - touching nothing. Also the MIL light will stay on for a certain amount of starts after it's detected something, before clearing.

Good to hear that it's not stalling now. That's the first step out of the way, now perhaps a wee bit of patience will allow the ECU to recalibrate itself & hopefully you'll be off & running.
As for Sat, I'm sure someone could pick you up if the car's not fully fettled for the run. I'm picking up one of my mates so don't have a free pax seat. Better that than going shopping.
Cheers,
Z.

You can short circuit the recalibration process by disconnecting the battery for half an hour IIRC.
Remember to disarm the alarm just before you whip off the negative terminal from the battery, otherwise it will go chicken oriental on you.
I think this will reset the ECUs learned parameters and should get you back to factory setup again, from where it will relearn the correct IACV setting (and not much else I think).
The lotus ECU might also recognise the ignition on, several presses of the throttle over it's full range, ignition off for a few seconds reset sequence (like the rover MEMS does).
The MIL will go out after so many restarts without the fault present. You can upload the code from the ECU to ask it why the MIL is on (but probably not after doing the 30 min battery disconnect).
On my S2 the MIL came on because the cam position sensor kept messing up. However as you are presented with a fast idle and sooty plugs one has to suspect the ECU temp sender and/or the cabling to it (the ECU thinks that the engine is still cold so is running in cold fast idle and richer mixture mode).
Cheers,
Robin
