Exige rear LED's

Post by Gareth » Tue Sep 20, 2011 8:36 pm

I've got two blown bulbs.
Do you need to change the whole unit (I had a friend woh had to but that was due to half of them not working) or can you buy replacement bulbs?

TIA
G

AFAIK its the whole unit. Admittedly you could dismantle the unit and get your soldering iron out

On Euro spec cars the outer ring lights up with the sidelights and they only have the half-lit inner LEDs when the fogs are on. The inners are never fully lit.
Federal cars have a fully lit inner LED with the sidelights, dunno where the fog is on them, would guess the inner LEDs just get brighter in the same way the outers get brighter when braking.

Either way I think you need to replace the unit - I changed one unit on my 240PP before it was sold and at the time I asked Craig and there no option to replace individual elements. The units are sealed on manufacture (some sort of ultrasonic welding I think) so whilst you can hack saw them open, you probably cannot reseal them very well. I looked at some a long time ago for interest and it turned out that it was the driver chip that was broken not the individual LEDs.

If it were me, I would do nothing until either it fails an MOT or you are just about to sell it, then change at the very last minute. These things aren't cheap.

Can you get round it to look for anything else?

Bring it along to KH on Friday and maybe Craig will have a tech handy?!?!

Come to think of it, are you giving it a shakedown on-track, that would be very worthwhile...

Ignore the full/half moon to work out if it's US/UK.

Lights out: UK lights have orange insides on the outers and US lights have clear insides - simplez.
