Cam belt and head gasket

Post by Lawrence » Wed Aug 30, 2006 10:04 am

Everyone with a K series has to do it
Changing a cam belt is the first stage of changing a head gasket

Prices range from £400-£800 for the work so why don't we do one for a laugh :) I have a gasket lying here :)

I have been offered the use of a Rover 214 for the upcoming autotest season and I suspect it needs a head gasket. (among a few other things) Being the rover and front transverse engine it is very easy to see all the work that is done.

So who wants to be here when I change it?

date to be decided ;) probably the night before the autotest ;)

Have done two (both on MGF’s) piece of p*ss from a technical point of view but a PIA from an access point of view.

Don’t know what it will be like on a front engined car but it might be cleaner just to drop the engine out.

Found the timing a fiddle but other than that no problem at all.

Don't be soft  Access is a doddle on the FWD rovers IIRC. You have to undo the engine mount as the belt goes around it but that is all. If you leave the plugs in (oops!) so you can torque up the crank bolt, jobs a carrot!

Nothing to worry about. HG is similar, just work through the manual. The only problem we hit was you have to rotate the cmashafts to accress some of the head bolts. No problem if your careful. John had a vacuum pump thingy which was fantastic for cleaning up excess coolant/oil/fuel which will go everywhere....

If Shug, John and me can do it on his drive with no idea and sober, anyone can :thumbsup

Forgot to add, bacon sandwiches and constant supply of tea is vital for HG changes, as ever, thanks Leslie!

Count me in.

I've done the cambelt on my car but would like to see a K with the head on/off/on again.

Mike.

Can we have a close up on the webcam? :D

It'd be like one of those medical documentaries...live gasket surgery.

I'm keen to see this done.
I've already had the HG changed twice (3 times if you count the faulty one)...next time I'll be having a bash myself.

Nice one Lawrence.

Cool

It is dead easy but as others have said seeing it all is tricky through the wheel arch.

This one is so easy to see as everything on the engine is where it was designed to be :)

Cameras are a good idea too, the web cam is a bullet cam so someone can point it at the oily bits if they wish.

What's the email address of the web cam, by the way? :popcorn
