Manifold buzz

Post by smee » Sat Apr 21, 2012 10:22 pm

I recently fitted a Janspeed 4-2-1 manifold to replace my knackered down pipe. However the aluminum shield will not fit behind it, John and Dave (JD Motors) suggest fitting an S2 shield which they think will fit.

However I am getting a terrible buzz from the manifold (I think) which is worst when lifting off in 3rd gear, approaching roundabouts etc. It is pretty invasive and verging on distracting, you find yourself trying to avoid lifting! What can I do to prevent this? I had an anti tizz bracket but it will not fit the new manifold and this is much louder than before. It also seems strange that it is worst in 3rd and is not totally dependent on revs i.e. same rpm in a different gear does not have the same effect. It did this to a much lesser extent before hand but not always. Would worn engine mounts cause this?

Any help appreciated, many thanks. :cheers

My piper variant of the same thing hits off the undertray whilst warming up and is then not too bad. I would drop the undertray and look for witness marks around the point where the manifold runs under the sump. I made mine quite a lot better by fitting spacers between the inside of the undertray and subframe where the 4xM8 bolts fit. This lowers the tray away from the manifold.

You might also consider getting an adjustable lower engine mount, e.g. the one EliseParts sell. This will allow you to change the angle of the engine a little bit and perhaps keep the pipe off whatever it is touching.

I assume all the heat shields are in good order and securely fitted.

Cheers,
Robin

I think I had cut a corner off one of the ducts on my under undertray iirc when I had it fitted to my car. Try and look through the wheel arch to see if the manifold is close to the undertray. The area around the flexi will be sitting the closest to the undertray. It could even be that your undertray isn't fitted correctly...thats the only time mine ever buzzed.

Take it for a spin without the undertray fitted so see if it stops.

With the heat shields I replaced my original S1 heat shield with a piece of Nimbus and used the original alternator heat shield.

Thanks for the help everyone, again!

Now if any of you can stop the rain I'll be able to investigate at the weekend

Now fixed!

Put a stack of washers in to space the undertray away from the manifold where the 2 big middle bolts are. Had to drill out washers I had as shop was shut and would have been much easier if I had a jack or ramps! Massive improvement with no buzz or wincing.

Thanks again for the advice.
