woody would not need to do it in the dark, he has a fantastic torch to use, and that has certainly lit up at least one tunnel in its day.

*Bows* Thanks all. 25 minutes to remove the head last time. Torch was provided for me yesterday.

Had a look at Puffin's car yesterday & I'm none the wiser. Fuel pump primes and on the first crank after standing there was a pop, but no other hint of combustion. After cranking it a few more times, there was no hum of fuel from the car as you'd usually have.

I didn't have any tools, so couldn't pull the plugs. I had donkey's ODB2, but of course there was no where to plug it. Car has the EFI tech box of tricks in the boot I think are sometimes found in VVC S1's and can cause issues?

Plug leads definatly need replaced either whatever else happens as at least one was had the plastic breaking up quite badly.

Have you tried bypassing the immobiliser just in case it's that ?
Only need the plug and two wires ?
I'm not sure how the imobiliser works on these cars, whether it stops the fuel pump, or the stops the spark ?

Woody isn't this just the misfire detection unit. Sure there is someway of bypassing it to make sure that isn't the issue?

You cannot bypass the spark inhibit part of the immobiliser. This does sound a bit like that - fires once then dies. I've seen this before with a broken code wire from Lucas 5AS unit to MEMS1.9 (I'm guessing it's similar on MEMS2J as used by S1 VVC).

The box of tricks is the misfire detection unit I would think. I think it just plugged into the original loom so could be unplugged and original loom plugged back together ... I've never actually done this though, so apologies if wrong.

However, I would still start with the spark plug leads/bores.

Cheers,
Robin

Robin,

I think your exactly right. As above I thought this was a misfire detection unit. I do believe the had to be made so they could be retrofitted as required so it would make sense. I'm sure we where fault finding on my car right at the very start which is believe it or not about 5 years ago it Ali bypassed it to eliminate it.

I wouldn't believe this would stop it firing up, more an issue running. I bet new leads and possibly spark plugs will sort it!

"sendmyusername" Your car is an S2 an the ECU does not contain a code lock. The S1 MEMS1.9 and MEMS2J ECUs do contain a code lock, in addition to the fuel/crank immobiliser that's common to both cars.

Robin

OK, then the immobiliser can only be bypassed by also changing the ECU to e.g. Emerald or sending it away to have the code lock removed ...

Robin

Update

Kirk who used to work at MMC took a look at it today and it has spark and it's not the immobiliser so the next guess is something compression related :(

Does anyone have a compression tester in the glasgow area and a free hour?
My car? Oh, it's the little yellow thing over there.
