If that doesn't hold up then you can try the likes of the people that make the custom gear cables for the Honda conversions. I'm sure they could knock something up at a fraction of the price. I can't remember the name of the company that makes the cables for the stark Honda kit but I'm sure someone else with a stark kit will be able to tell you.

Somewhat surprised if copper will be strong enough but I guess you will find out. If you can find a flexible steel braided flexi shaft (which looks very like the flexi drive shafts I have for flexible screwdriver/socket drive shafts) then it would probably be quite simple to TIG weld or perhaps TIG braze (something like SIF-Bronze TIG brazing rods for example) on sufficient material onto the end to allow you to machine in (file it) into the correct shape to fit into the motor. Welding would, of course, be stronger, brazing is better for lower temps which may or may not suit depending on what welding does to the flexi shaft. Given the cost of replacement I guess you can afford to pay someone who can weld to help out . . . here's the shaft I was thinking about . . . you may need more than one for experimentation purposes . . .

Also, strimmers use a similar type of flexible drive . . . 1.5 meters for 20 odd quid . . . again, welding and end on would be required, someone with a lathe could probably make a suitable end . . .

David very kindly drove out to West Linton to give me shot in his 335d this afternoon. What a hugely impressive machine. Monster torque, thumping straight line go with that feeling you only get in a properly quick car that the acceleration isn't letting up at all as you get way past the legal limit. Best of all it all feels so effortless. The ride on 19s and runflats was nothing like as harsh as I was expecting too - firm certainly but very acceptable. As a fast, refined, usable daily driver with reasonable running costs it is the nuts and I want one :)

Many thanks again David :thumbsup

Sorry, I meant to post an update.
The copper wire worked a treat.

I stuck my head under the seat and pressed the switch to watch it work.
It doesn't have to be flexible !
I thought it did in case the seat height was raised.

Some guys on the bimmersforum in the USA have ground down an Allen key

Thanks fd - that flexible shaft would have worked too, but it would need welded to hold it.

Two negatives make a positive but only in Scotland do two positives make a negative - 'Aye right.'
