Lets do an audit on our car..!!!!

Post by Michael » Sat Oct 07, 2006 10:55 pm

We can do polls on particular faults. Would be really interesting to see what percentage of our cars actually develop them. I mean sounds like bloody everyone has had a radiator go/balls joints replaced/steering rack blah blah.

Of course we would need to be sure which parts were shared by the different models so we can poll accurately.

eg are all the radiators the same on elises and exiges etc

Maybe our cars are not that bad?!!

I wouldn't say things like ball joints/steering rack wearing out are faults, they're just being used and as such will eventually break/need replacing.

At what mileage would you expect an M3's rack to be replaced....

Exactly, never!

We cant say "but this is a Lotus". We have paid money for a car that functions and that is it - no sound deadening/comfort/gadgets/extra seats. Its not functioning when its broken though.

The sum of the parts in a Lotus is F all. Thats why its good performance per pound. We should therefore expect that the few vital components that they have included in the design are at least going to bear the loads that the car was meant for.

Its like going into an average priced restaurant and the food tastes sh*t. We mustnt say well its a cheap restaurant - bull shiit. The reason its cheaper is because the sum of the parts are cheaper and there are less frills....but the food must still be cooked well and handled properly by the chefs and TASTE GOOD. It might be a really simple dish and the decor is average, but it has to be enjoyable to eat.

If you thrashed it aroung a race track I would expect it to fail - it's not possible to make any type of balljoint that when presented with impact loads will not eventually wear out. Nature didn't manage it and she's been trying for a couple of 100 million years now :-)

My audi's steering rack failed on the road. My pal's audi wishbone collapsed due to ball joints failure and poor design.

I cannot see that it's worth worrying about, to be honest, I mean who really cares? If you don't want your balljoints to wear out, don't drive the car on the race track and they'll last 100,000 miles, maybe.

Cheers,
Robin

Look after your car and treat it gently, and wheel bearings, ball joints steering racks, brake hubs, shocks etc will last for many years, I can vouch for that...........

I would change the analogy to be a small French restaurant in Scotland. The food is exceptional but the wallapper might be a bit tatty, the wine over priced, the waiter will be snooty and you have no option of asking the chef for a well done steak.
