Run away odometer

Post by fudnie » Thu Jul 16, 2015 2:43 pm

After nipping out for my lunch today, got back in the Elise (2003 S2 111S) turned the ignition on and I noticed the odometer spinning up. It finally came to rest at about 750,000 miles, this may affect the resale value...

I put the ignition off and back on and it is still reading the same value. I thought maybe resetting the stack but i couldn't remember all the magic words but will try again later.

Anyone seen this before? Any ideas on what could cause this or how to remedy it?

I have heard of this before, only way is to have it reset. There is a serial port on the board that you can use to access it. ( you have to have a decent idea of how to do it)

750,000 miles... I'll give you £5k for it! I trust the service records are up to date and all ties in?

You'll need to get it reset - it's not something you can do for yourself (well, not something normal people can do). You might need to ask Lotus to help you out. Cheers, Robin

Would it have to be set to zero?

As long as he has the mileage on service sheets and MOT's that should suffice as proof. Could the gizmo that you made for me Robin be used to wind the mileage back on?

Tut,

No, but it could be used to wrap the clock, eventually, assuming it wraps ... there is a risk that when it gets to 999,999 miles that it doesn't roll over to 0 but just sticks at 999,999 forever.

I believe that the odometer can be set to any value using the data link & appropriate software - that's to allow dealers to replace broken instrument panels and set the mileage appropriately.

Cheers,
Robin

That's great if a dealer can set it. Mine has had a replacement clock at some point and it's rather irritating that the numbers are not right.

Slight thread drift, but one of our Indian employees clocked his company car up the way, after being questioned on his mileage claims, he added 25,000 Kms to his Skoda Superb!
I worked out he would have had to drive 10,000km a week in Hyderabad, which is nigh on impossible!

He didn't remain an employee for long!
