Thanks Robin.
Spoke to my local garage I use for the other cars today and they will do the pressing/removal for me so will pass on your advice as they won't have done an Elise before.
Ordered a new timken bearing and hub nut etc so hopefully make some progress soon. Plan now is to get it all sorted then put in the garage for the winter!

Well unless you manage to write off 2 cars in one accident leaving one parked neatly on top of the othergraeme wrote:You won't get a p*ss-taking here. You're in fine company. SE's written off more underpants than any other car club in Scotland!
Good luck with the fix. Doesn't look too bad.

Re: Rookie Error...
Thanks for kind offer Thinfourth, alas I am significantly further South (Cheshire!) - originally from East Lothian!
My new local garage has come up trumps and pressed a new wheel bearing and moved over the flange/caliper bracket for a crate of beer
So I now have hub back and ready to re fit -

I have also decided to upgrade the toe links whilst I'm at it and ended up going with Spitfire which arrived today - very shiny!

Just need to fit the brackets and then hopefully it will be rolling ready for a geo and trip to the body shop...
Going to send wheel here http://www.alloywheelrepairs.net/ once paint done - has anyone used them? Based in Carnwath...
Here is what's left of the old hub... I'm going to get it cleaned up then mount it up somewhere to remind me not to be a muppet again

Cheers
Chris

Re: Rookie Error...
Well it's about time I updated this thread.
Got the car back from SVR in Accrington (StephenM on Seloc) at the weekend. Great chap to deal with and looks like a fantastic job - you wouldn't know it had been repaired inside or out. He also spotted some previous paint work and some cracks in the clam which were sorted so it's all looking very tidy now. High recommended if anyone ever needs a bodyshop in NW England.

Got the Spitfire toe links on and before paint it went into Ollie at Phoenix for a check over and geo. couple of ball joints replaced but otherwise no other damage and all nice and straight.
Just need to sort out the wheel now. Compomotive will not make me one which is understandable, and I just missed a set on seloc classifieds which is annoying. I'm going to send it to the place in Lanarkshire and hope they can fix it properly...

Re: Rookie Error...
Hi Chris,
Be sure to check that the toe link is able to rotate enough in each direction (imagine grabbing the shaft with your hand like it was a motorcycle throttle and twisting it on/off) - as the wheel travels up/down, the shaft must rotate - if the spherical bearing (ball joint) hits the end stops before the suspension reaches full travel then any remaining travel will twist against the bracket at one end or the other, which isn't going to end well.
No doubt Ollie knows his stuff, so if he fitted them I'm sure it's fine.
You can test the full droop case by jacking the car until the wheels are off the ground (e.g. on a two post lift). It's harder to test in the other direction without disconnecting the spring/damper and then jacking up the wheel rather than the car.
Cheers,
Robin
