Double Din Head Unit Help Please

Post by Mel » Tue Feb 16, 2016 1:26 pm

Looking to install into the Evora with camera etc but not sure what to go for. Been offered a secondhand Alpine INE W920R (2 months old) for a reasonable price but was looking for advice or suggestions. Leaning more toward pioneer with Apple CarPlay as seems more up to date :)

That could well be mine Mel, I bought it for Xmas for my Honda CR-V, fitted and upgraded it with the latest Maps, but I am now getting a Motability car and selling the Honda so took it out again. Believe retail price is £750.

Craig said that he was looking for one for a customer so I sent it down to him with N3. It also has the two extra connectors that I bought as they were not part of the unit.

Double Din Head Unit Help Please

Mel, my Pioneer DH120 with CarPlay and reverse cam has been brilliant. Great VFM and really looks the part, too.

Craig of CMC arranged installation to my Evora when at Murray, so there's help avail there too.

If it is Tut's Alpine unit you've been offered, don't let that put you off. He didn't use it long. LOL ;-)

One thing we've discovered is if your Evora is an early one, be prepared for a bit more of a complex install - stuff like the reversing camera and Bluetooth functionality were farmed out to little independent plugin modules on the early cars - not a massive issue when fitting a later head unit with it all integrated, barring the reversing camera, which will need at the least a cable run through the car, or at worst a new camera.

I went for the head unit you've been offered, but can't make a comment yet as we've still got to get around to getting it fitted. I got as far as getting it plumbed in and all working apart from the reverse cam, then to discover I'd need to pull lots of the car apart to get at that bit, so put the original back in while we got a chance to get over to CMC to get Craig to do it (he's done several now and got it down to a fine art)

There are better units out there now, the Ex-Lotus Alpine was just a good deal at the time when we got it.

PS - reading again, looks like you're upgrading from non tech-pack to include a cam and stuff, so what I wrote above is largely academic :damnfunny

Mel, I have the Alpine in my van.

Anyway it is an excellent piece of kit. Connects via Bluetooth to any phone (not just apple) and does so automatically and so far hasn't dropped it once. So easy to stream music from the phone, take a call on the handsfree and have the satnav on at the same time. Works very well. And once used to the satnav it is pretty quick to 'navigate' round.

Can't comment on carplay pioneer as I haven't seen it.
