Neighbour is selling his 55 reg Boxster. Will be having a look tomorrow, but any advice on key aspects to look for ?
Its about 55-60k, manual 3.2S (drove it last year for about 10 miles).
From what I've seen, it gets looked after (perhaps not pampered like some on here

), so is this a practical gap-filler for the next year ?

I ran that age/model Boxster for 2.5 years. I think it would be a great everyday car. A 55 plate means you hit the lower £295 road tax bracket as 06 onwards is £500. Servicing is every 2 years, although as getting on a bit I guess an annual oil change would be best. On servicing, they are known to get cracking around the casing of the ignition coil packs. Worth asking to see if had a few replaced over the years. Consumables can be pricey, so just your common sense checks like tyres, discs, pads etc. Porsche rated tyres have an 'N' marking on them so they should have a code like N1, N2, or N3 if you were particularly keen on wanting the 'official' tyres. Other than that, in my time only other issue I had was a broken spring. Had to buy a pair from Porsche so still have the spare one in garage in its wrapper if you need it!

Ive had two 986 versions, The rear brake discs tend to rust on the inside face and the parts are not cheap. If you pay £100 to £150 at a Porsche dealer they will do a full inspection and come up with a big list of jobs with prices which you could use to negotiate the price down and at least you would know what needs doing so you could get a cheaper quote elsewhere.
I found them to be a great all round car and usable year round.

Great car, great condition, great price (man maths all good). Even fits in the garage (its longer than my Golf).
But, after a 130 mile circuit of the NE in the R, I'm struggling to justify another sensible sports car.
What do I do ?

Money in the bank ain't doing much for you.
Money in a Boxster seems fairly safe.

He's going to put it on Autotrader/PH next week.
Met Blue, 2005(55) 987 3.2S. FSH (most recently with SP Autobahn in Sitrling). Doesn't use oil between services. Exhaust manifold bolts replaced. Gear linkage cables replaced. Newish discs all round. ~5mm tread all round on 19" alloys with N rated Michelins (are they called 'lobster claws' ?). TR Ends done recently.
I think its a bargain, probably <£11k, but 'right car/wrong time' for me.

Tremendous cars. Bought one for my wife and she loved it. Even tracked it once at her request to kill the rear tyres.
Would have another. Really well built, solid, quick and generally superbly reliable.
Toyed with buying one and "Boag-ing" it as you can liberate more power quite easily.
Walshy reckons his 986 might be the best car he's ever bought which says a lot given how it gets used.
Fuel economy is mid to high teens in town , 26-30 extra urban.

Thanks Andy. Please pass on my thanks to UncleRon - he was nice enough to pass on his experiences of his 986 purchase in a comprehensive PM.
