Alternative tyre options

I've had a full year now of trackdays making all the SIDC days and a couple of knockhills own organised days, in my S2 111s Elise. I've also had a few blats with friends and have been running federals 595 rsr's which I absouloutley love, being a great around tyre for wet, road and track use. I find them highly predictable and progressive on track, but.... The only thing stopping me from buying these again are the lamination marks that are notorious with these tyres. These have lasted me a whole season with some life left in them.



For the winter lye up I've been thinking a different route from the usuall suspects like the AD08R or the older 7's.... I've been thinking out of the box because I like going against the grain. I need something that good on track and also good in the wet and on roads.

Either on my team dynamic 1.2's

Nankangs ns-2r in 120 soft compound which can be had for £318 for a set
Nakangs new AR-1 which might not be too great in standing water
Toyo r1r
Kumo ecsta V7OA
I'm almost sure I won't be buying AD08r's

Or do I stick with which is tried and tested with myself and buy the Federals again.

Or has anybody got any other suggestions?

I had them on an old car and I know they are well liked on here, but I wasn't that keen and I don't want to come across like I was trolling.

Plus I like to try experimenting and finding out what else works.

Heard good things about the nankangs tbh, seem to be going down well if a little short on life.

I had them on the rear of the BMW when I bought it (NS 2Rs). They weren't good.

ETA, ran ad08Rs on the elise; they were excellent.

I used them all-year round on a 450 nag Subaru, even in snow. Bit frisky in snow. Of course 4wd helped with traction but not lateral grip or braking.

I've got them on my elise and while i've got winters for, well, winter, the ad08's seem pretty good in spring and autumn in the wet - even displacing standing water pretty well.

I replaced them with Eagle F1 asy3. No longer have the traction light blinking at every yump, dip and lose surface. No longer have random oversteer in the wet. I was switching the car to dynamic traction every time I took it down a b road as it kept cutting the power, even at a moderate pace. I leave it set to default now and have not issues. However, the F1s are double the price. (car is a 130i on Msport suspension, so a bit boingy at the rear).

Having ran both RS-R's and AD08r's on a VX220, I wouldn't really rate the AD08r's as an improvement on the road in winter / cooler weather.

They have similar characteristics of a drop off in grip in the wet / cold. Both excellent tyres, just don't see the point in switching between the two.

Eagle F1 Asym 2 /3 are excellent. Apparently Rainsport 3's could be a good choice also in inclement conditions.

I used them on my bike engined Toniq and had a couple of hairy moments with them letting go on the limit.....Ok it was in a car that only weighed 425 kilos but it was enough for me to change to 888's. Once I take a disliking I'm hard to change my mind and stubborn some might say.

If we all liked the same thing it would be a boring world.

I was disappointed with the wear on my AD08rs. Loved the AD07s and AD08s but only got 2 track days and a few hundred road miles out a set of rear AD08r's on the Exige.
Left field option of Rainsport 3s is a good call. Uniroyal are the un-trendy option, but 10 pages on Pheads say they are a big step up from 2s.

Ive got the Rainsports on my MX5 & I swear by them, no idea what they are like on Elise though (Toyos on mine from previous owner)

Wow, thats really not much! For comparison I had done 8 track days and around 2.5K road miles on my AD08R's and they still had easily 3mm tread left.

But I do drive slow on the track!

I'd used the S1 specific LTS ad05/06 before switching to the ad08R. I'd never got more than 6k from a rear set. The ad08R have done 6k and the rears are only half worn.

However, if you've not had good experiences in the past, don't blame you for looking elsewhere. I wouldn't fit a Pirelli to a wheel barrow.

i had RSRs on the m3 and loved them also. was £600 for a full set. I have Yokohama Advan Neova AD07 on the Elise now, (was on bridgestones when you drove it) welcome to try...
