So, after what I thought was head gasket failure, I stripped my head off the block and have discovered a cracked liner ( yep, imagine the joy I felt seeing that one

), so now I have a liner to replace and was hoping someone could advise me. do I need to remove the whole engine? and how do I remove/replace the liner? also anything else I should know would be appreciated.
thanks

I think, you should be able to keep the engine in situ, drop the sump, unbolt the Conrod on the affected cylinder, remove the piston & rod, then the liner will come out without much effort.
You probably want to consider if you want to patch it up like that and what height that and other liners will be against taking it out and overhauling the bottom end now.

thanks, im going to be carefully measuring the other liners to make sure everything is at the correct level and will clamp the other liners down to make sure they don't move. i suspect the inlet manifold gasket has failed and let enough water into the cylinder second from the gearbox to cause hydraulic lock, cracking the liner. so i shall have to have a careful look at the conrod as well. I am hoping to convert to a Honda perhaps next winter or the one after so i really just need it to last me till then and as i use it every day to get to university i am trying to get it back together asap

Thanks for the offer but ive already ordered a liner and should have it tomorrow, so we shall see the extent of the damage. also does anyone know if the rods from the mg zr 160 rods are the same as in any other vvc?

Later rods are different, but I'm not sure if it's all or 160 vvc specific.

the rebuild begins with some piston cleaning, getting them ready for new rings and big end bearings.
