Is my car broken?

Post by kill_zippy » Sat Dec 23, 2006 7:24 pm

First, funny rattling noise and it didn't want to start.

Then, it started and drove like normal.

Then, when i turned off the ignition and tried to restart it kept making the same tapping noise from the engine and nothing happened. Sometimes it sounds like it is trying to start and other times all you can hear is the burr of the starter motor?

Do i need a new engine or is it something less drastic?

About six months and the car is used pretty much every day. I don't think its the battery as the knocking noise was coming from the engine area...?

SOunds like solenoid problems. IIRC it's part of the starter motor on the liz, robin or Stu160 will know for sure.

Loose battery connector at the battery (which is in the boot in my S2, but may have moved back to the front services in later S2s - not sure), loose cable at the starter or a dodgy earth strap (engine-to-chassis most likely I think).

If the solenoid itself is broken I would be surprised, though not impossible.

If car is reasonably new then it's a Toyota engine, so I cannot say whether or not the solenoid can be ordered by itself, but I would doubt it :-)

Cheers,
Robin

Sound like a loose wire on the battery,or starter,or the starter itself is on the way out.
I have to say,it sounds like I have a bird stuck in my starter just now, very strange noise.

Are you about tomorrow,I could have a look?

Stu
