Using Coolant?

Post by james » Sat Dec 30, 2006 4:33 pm

Guys

I am aware of the K series HGF weakness and I understand that it "isnt supposed to use water" but mine is using SOME.

Now how much is too much? For example it was right on the filler line (the join in the expansion tank) a couple of months ago and now after say about 4000 miles its just starting to peek below the line (both observed when engine cold.)

Given that the warranty expires in April, is this worth getting this checked or am I going to get loads of "pah, thats not using water, thats normal" type responses.

Its an S2 2002 model if you cant tell already.

Thanks :)

Sounds ok to me. It ideally should use none, but over that period and given the differences in weather it could be explained. Also if you have opened the cap while it was hot.

It may be something like a weeping pipe joint, a porous pipe, a porous head (!) the inlet manifold leaking or a rad leak.

Just remember to keep an eye on it and if it moves alot find out why. Coolant paranoia is a good thing!

Dont worry about it,the levels can change ,as its cold just now,it tends to go down a bit, keep your eye on the level, but dont put any more in,if it goes any lower, then you may have a problem.Mine has also went below the Min just now.

Buy a new cap just to be on the safe side. Mine emptied the tank and I bought a new cap, filled it up and it's been fine since. Should cost a few quid from your nearest ex-Rover dealer :)
