Fitting a mini-size front number plate

Post by campbell » Thu Mar 15, 2007 2:51 am

My front plate (and plinth) got dragged off for the umpteenth time a few weeks ago, so I finally lost my patience and ordered a 3" x 12" version. I know these are not strictly legal, but they carry the correct font, are not sticker-style, and are surely a darn sight better than none at all, Ociffer.

Here's some daft pics...

Picasaweb album (the Slideshow option is quite neat)

It's amazing what you can do with polystyrene, gaffer tape, double-sided carpet tape, and some random bits of wood :-) And the plate is going NOWHERE. Cool.

Aye, considered one of those. Where did you source it? My local plate shop couldn't get one.

Nope, no stick-on numberplate is legal.

You sure? :?
When I got my sticky made up I was assured that it was legal - it has a proper reflective background, correct spacing, correct font and most importantly the BS mark... Passed a couple of MOTs and never had any bother from the BiB in two years...

Just interested so I won't be surprised when I get the inevitable 7 day ticket

Isn't there something in the regs about the plate having to be vertical?

No questions about my occupation..........OK!!!!!!!

The plate must be vertical.
The plate must have the regulation font and size of character.
The plate must display the BS mark.

Then lots of stuff about being easily legible from anywhere within a square of a certain size..............zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!

Sorry, thats me awake again.

If you are getting "done" for a number plate then you have failed an attitude test and you'll be getting "done" for lots, if you dig there is always lots..........the usual "i'm really sorry....." will work wonders.......try to look as if you mean it though

The only people that might give you a ticket is a very bored, grumpy traffic officer (or someone doing random VOSA or emmission tests), the vast majority won't bother.

PS don't mention that "it must be fine cause it passed its MOT with it on".........

Hope this helps......

100%
No stick-on plates have the correct backing material to reflect correctly.

No, number plates must meet the British Standard requirements and we are not aware of any self-adhesive number plates that are able to meet these requirements.

been thinking about doing the same since I bought mine, would a 3x12 plate be the correct size for my car?

There is a plinth thingy that is part of the front clam I think and the current plate is screwed on.

(should really go outside and measure it but it's bloody horrible out there and I have a nice bottle of wine faction)
